Looking for bitter, piney, classic west coast IPA's.

Still trying to find good classic west coast style IPA's. Even some of the old school classics (stone ipa) have changed a lot from what they used to be. I want the old school "C" hops like Columbus, Chinook, and Centennial in ridiculous amounts!

Most IPA's that claim to be WC nowadays have less bitterness than a SNPA.

Does ANYONE still make beers like this???

P.S. One of my favorite beers, Celebration IPA, should be available in my area (ATL) very soon!

    Just drink swamis forever then
Swami's IPA is a West Coast style IPA with citrus and pine notes, 6.8% alcohol, and uses Chinook, CTZ, Cascade, Centennial, Citra, and Simcoe hops.

Buy a years worth of Swami , Citraholic and Amalgamator and never come back!

My answers will not help you, I just by the tried and true classic ones that are still around here: Yards IPA, Troëgs Perpetual and their new seasonal Leaf Seeker, Victory Hop Devil, and then the occasional finding of good dated Firestone Union Jack.

What about Hopsecutioner? That’s still gotta be around down there; Sweetwater??

Then there's the answer to your problem.

You just live in an area that isn't the West Coast where most West Coast IPAs are.

You can always set up a trade or some BA can send you some from out here

Wow, totally forgot about Yards ale, that stuff is amazing! unfortunately, I have never seen it outside Philly....

I will check my local stores for those others...

hopsecutioner is local to me but it is very underwhelming. You would think with a name like that it should be a hoppy monster but no, just a mildly hopped "balanced" ipa..

I want the hoppiest damn beer I can find! Like old school: Tuppers Hop pocket, Racer 5 or green flash

Boundary Bay Cedar Dust (now brewed by Black Raven) is your solution. Gotta come to the Puget Sound area to get it though.

Just finished a pack of Stone IPA. While good, it is nothing like I remember. I think they got acquired and subsequently changed the recipe to be more balanced and mild..

I don't want frickin balanced and mild, I want HOPS!

That stinks @Donovanj I feel like my recollection, 15 years ago or so, of Hopsecutioner is what you said it no longer is, bummer.

SN Northern Hemisphere Harvest is in six packs again and out in the wild. I smiled the whole time I drank it, couldn’t stop, every sip.

Last weekend in the NBW thread I discussed a relatively new brand from Sly Fox: Coastal Quest IPA. They brand this beer via "West Coast-style IPA".

    From my post:

    "Aroma:

A combination of citrus and pine with a hint of biscuit malt in the background.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with a combination citrus/pine hop flavors and just a tiny bit of biscuit malt flavor. There is a medium bitterness."

Maybe you would prefer a more elevated level of bitterness?

Also, Sly Fox is likely not available in Georgia?

    Cheers!

Dang dude, you just show up with Mr. Peabody in the Wayback Machine? That beer was way ahead of it's time for use of hops and how goddamn bitter it was for being brewed on the East Coast in the 90s.

Had to break open Michael Jackson's "Ultimate Beer" (1998) to re-read what he had to say about it.

(pg 137) "Bob Tupper is a history teach who give lectures on beer at a famous bar, The Brickskeller [another trip down memory lane], in Washington, D.C. He and his wife Ellie, an editor, designed this beer, which is produced by the local Old Dominion brewery. It has a flowery aroma; a crisp, cedary, malt background; and a wood-bark bitterness in its big, lingering finish. A hop "pocket" is the long sack in which pressed hops are packed. It looks like a boxer's punchbag; this beer hops and hits with the best."

This was back when Old Dominion was still located in VA, not entirely sure when they moved to Delaware. I seem to remember that by the late 2000s it was contract brewed at St. George in Hampton, but I may be mistaken.

Anyhow, it was a crazy beer for back then. Separate the men from the boys, put hair on your chest type beer. As bitter but with less caramel malt sweetness than the WCIPAs that were just starting to show up when I first started really getting into craft in the early 2000s. It should be resurrected.

The Hop Pocket Pilsner was also very nice, but I don't have memories of it like I did the ale.

Tuppers Hop Pocket was one of the hoppiest beers I ever had... I was a hophead even back then but It was the one beer where I had to admit "that's one damn hoppy beer"!

Still waiting on SN Celebration so I asked the local shop for a WC style IPA. This is what they recommended:

But my recommendation is to pick up a sixer of Bigfoot when it's released in the next couple months. Drink it fresh. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
