I am currently drinking 8.4 ounces of Sierra Nevada’s Pils. Which… just doesn’t make sense to me. This is a tall boy or stovepipe beer, the kind of crusher for grilling or tailgating. But I digress. Because, given the size, it turns out this is the perfect closer—the last beer of the night. One more when you know better but cant help it. so, tl;dr: what’s your closer? For the last beer of the night do you go big or dial it down?
I usually go up in ABV so ideally I'd like to close with something barrel aged and a sipper. But most of the time I'll just switch to liquor I did enjoy the Pils format...perfect school night beer size
Full disclosure, I usually go big. Reason: Even at 50 I feel like I have a lot more bad decisions to make. Barleywines and Imperial Stouts help me make that dream a reality. I'm just a fucking idiot and I'll never learn. For what it's worth, I still recover like I'm in my 20s.
This is something I could never plan. I never know and it's nice that I can have whatever I fancy from the oulde beer stube as a closer. Variety is good. **As far as SN Pils goes, the lil' stange can is alright and serves the purpose that Ken G put on the reverse of the can. It's a nice splash!
My last beer is done before 7 pm because I have a non-elastic bladder. Too much info? If I do drink anything it's a nip of bourbon before 10 pm.
I haven't had to worry too much about this since I've drastically reduced my alcohol consumption (doctor's orders, etc.). I'll occasionally visit a taproom and order a flight that includes an imperial stout of some sort, which I always save for last. I love high ABV beers, but I really have to watch it these days since my tolerance isn't what it used to be.
I appreciate tasters and half-pours for exactly these reasons. Sometimes, all I really need is a few ounces of a big stout to cap off a session.
The true closer beer is the one you find the next morning half consumed in a glass next to your chair/ on the floor by the couch.
I usually lean in the milder direction. Lately, those little SN Pils cans have been my closer, too. If I'm going to have multiple beers in a day, my pattern tends to be milder, stronger, milder. It might start with a lager or milder ale style, move on to a big stout or something Belgian, and then finish things off with something milder.
At home- whatever's in the fridge that I think I can finish Out and about- I try to quit while I'm ahead
My nightcap is usually whatever the strongest beer I have on tap at the time is. Currently I have a 10.1% Dopplebock, an 8.1% Imperial Cream Ale and an Aventenus Weizenbock clone 7.5%-ish I think, so probably one of those? Getting ready to brew a Belgian Strong Golden Ale next week, so there will be that once something kicks. As far as purchased beer goes, it really depends on the situation and current inventory. I'll never pass up a Hoppin' Frog big beer for a lastie.
My closer is always a dark beer (brown/black ale, porter, stout, etc.) Extra points if it has coffee in it. Unlike many guys on BA, I'm not a huge fan of imperial/heavier beers. Tonight the closer will be a Guinness Extra Stout (or 3).
