    Firstly, Happy Halloween everybody!

You regulars know the deal. If any of you BAs are new to this thread the deal is to discuss with us a beer that is new to you. Let us know how it looks, tastes, etc. and please share with us and other thoughts you have. And since it is Halloween, do you have a scary beer to drink?

The ‘best’ Chocolate Pumpkin beer blend ever?

My wife is a BIG fan of a beer blend of a Pumpkin Beer and chocolaty Stout which she calls a Chocolate Pumpkin. This is an annual treat for drinking at Halloween time.

Over the years we have used a variety of brands for the Pumpkin Beer but we have tried to stay consistent with using Young’s Double Chocolate Stout for the chocolaty Stout portion of the blend. Unfortunately, it would appear that Young’s is no longer available in my area. A situation that the Wholesale Distributor who used to handle Young’s beers no longer chooses to distribute them?

Well, luckily my wife found an alternative chocolaty Stout which may ‘do the trick’ (for a treat?): Samuel Smith’s Organic Chocolate Stout. On the 4-pack box it states: “Luxurious chocolate married perfectly with smooth, creamy stout”. Well, it sure reads like a tasty candidate for a Chocolate Pumpkin blend.

Below is how this beer is detailed on BA:

“Brewed with well water (the original well, sunk in 1758, is still in use with the hard water is drawn from 85 feet underground), the gently roasted organic chocolate malt and real organic cocoa used in this ale impart a delicious, smooth and creamy character, with inviting deep flavours and a delightful finish - this is the perfect marriage of satisfying stout and luxurious chocolate that will lead to smiles and refills. Samuel Smith's brews in traditional coppers, uses stone 'Yorkshire Squares' for fermentation, and ships every bottle from the brewery with great pride.”

The Pumpkin Beer selected for this year’s blend is Schlafly Pumpkin Ale. The spiciness of this beer will hopefully marry well with the chocolate flavors of the Samuel Smith’s Stout.

The process to make a Chocolate Pumpkin:

Step 1 is to pour the Pumpkin Beer in the glass(es) first:

Step 2 is to then pour the Chocolate Stout. I prefer to perform a vigorous pour to encourage mixing.

So, how well did the Samuel Smith’s Organic Chocolate Stout ‘work’ for this year’s blend?

    Appearance:

A very dark brown approaching black with a khaki colored head.

    Aroma:

There is a pleasing combination of pumpkin pie spices (i.e., cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg) and chocolate.

    Taste:

The flavor follows with a combination of pumpkin pie spices and chocolate being front and center. There is a low-moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

A luscious mouthfeel with an off-dry finish.

    Overall:

This blended beer is very good - excellent. Is this year’s version ‘better’ than past years version using Young’s Double Chocolate Stout? Hmmm?

Cheers to Chocolate Pumpkin blended beers!

Thanks for the kick off, @JackHorzempa ! I'm starting with a big barrel-aged stout from Burial Beer Co. - The Moment I Begin To Adore the Ominous Pall of A Darkness I Had Mistaken. The name AND beer are both mouthfuls! This was brewed for their 12th anniversary. An imperial stout aged in a mixture of rum and bourbon barrels. 15% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a super thick black with pretty much zero head. The nose is insane. Chocolate cake, rum, bourbon, vanilla, fudge, slight walnut note, and plums.

The taste is intense. Boozy for sure. The 15% is not lost on this. Much sweeter on the taste than I'd expect based on the nose. Lots of vanilla, marshmallow, slight maple, chocolate, loads of dark fruit, bourbon, rum, candy, brown sugar, cherries, and sugar-coated raisins. Honestly, it comes across as dark fruit soaked in rum and a little bit of bourbon. Really interesting how these flavors come out of a beer that had nothing added other than the barrel aging.

Silky finish for sure. Great mouthfeel, and an aftertaste of rum and raisin. Very enjoyable overall. A great one to share.

Cheers for getting us started, was living in fear I might have to start this...

Surprised I never thought about this blend as most of better pumpkin beers I've like were stouts or porters. Since I have this pumpkin beer, I may do this soon.

Mad props to @snaotheus for this one. Cheers Ryan! Machine House Fresh Hop Simcoe IPA, 7.0% ABV; 4.65 overall

Pours an effervescent gold with 2 fingers of pearl colored head. Good head retention & great lacing, never drops completely bright; but all is forgiven. Stays effervescent throughout the pour

S: Grassy, melons, pears. Peaches & white grapes once warmed up, more grassy notes too

T: Pretty dry, pomelo, green melon & grassyness up front. Grassy & herbal hops dominate as this beer warms up some bready sweetness & green melon as well. Finishes dry with green melon, grassyness & pomelo. Minor deduction for being drier than I prefer

MF: Medium body, creamy carbonation, great balance, slight grittyness to this

Super drinkability, probably one of the best Simcoe focused beers I've ever had

Really interesting blend @JackHorzempa love it.

I opened this, this afternoon. The cost was kind of high...but hey, have to treat myself every once in a while

Tilquin Oude Pinot Gris Fruit Lambic. Traditional Lambic with Pinot Gris grapes of course. 8.4% ABV.

Pours with a bit of haziness, an amber/orange color. A white head forms for a minute, but recedes to a ring quickly.
Oh man, this is aromatic. White wine and grapes, citrus pith. Spicy, honey, lavender kind of aroma. Just the slightest hint of the musty/funky yeast.
Taste wise, like the nose, lots going on here. Zesty, spicy citrus, mingles with white wine and grapes. Some musty funk for sure, and I love that puckering tartness. A bit of honey like sweetness, and pink tart grapefruit in the finish.
A medium to full body. Effervescent carbonation at first, but smooths out. The puckering tartness is a real treat, and makes me want to keep coming back. This is fantastic all around.

No surprise this is all around excellent. I really love the mingling of the grapes, other citrus like fruits, funk and the tartness all balance out perfectly. Very glad I splurged on a bottle, and might have to again.

Overall score is 4.47, which is one of the highest scores I have given in a while.

My pupper, Moe, and I were enjoying the courtyard on this beautiful day, and I'm taking my time with this beauty while I'm getting close to finishing this masterpiece of a novel by Adam Johnson.

So, definitely a good afternoon. I might end up at a local brewery tomorrow with some friends...maybe they have something new, and maybe I'll have time to review them. So a bunch a maybes for the rest of the weekend

I saw the label and thought this would be good for Halloween. Bad choice. Cat-O-Lantern Imperial Brown Ale from Fat Orange Cat.

Dark brown brew with mimimal foam dissipating immediately. Aroma of old dishrag along with a firecracker broken open. Taste is utterly bitter. Just when I think I have had the most degraded excuse for a beer, along comes another to plumb even those depths. This one I would call disgusting. There is some hint of canned peaches along with canned corn and charerd vegetables I wonder if this is what burnt mattress stuffing tastes like. Call it muddy water with aspirin. This should teach me finally to check for the dreaded words on the label: “Distributed by Twelve Percent.” And also to avoid that coven of witches in North Haven, CT.

Fat Orange Cat USED to be a very small NANO brewery in Connecticut. house beers were solid to good.
They started contract brewing a few years ago and I havent been impressed with the newer stuff from 12% offerings.
I will say other 12% beers, especially hazies and big pastry stouts are usually pretty good.
Sorry for the loser beer for you. But your descriptions did make me chuckle if that is worth anything!:laughing::laughing:

Tonight is first night without soccer in the AM in quite a bit so m big barreled aged beer is what is on tap at casa de Sully! This is Barreled Souls from Saco, Maine. Y'all know these guys , right? The beer is Big Bang rye barrel aged variant. 13.2% ABV. Lets see what we've got here.

    onto my review:
I am sampling a 500 ml bottle at cellar temp. The beer was purchased as part of a bottle society pickup. Bottled on date of 08/05/2024. aged in barrels for 13 months and 3 days., beer registers 13.2% ABV.
I am pouring into my large snifter for this sampling.
The beer pours a rich mahogany color from the bottle and reveals a deep ruby red hue when held up to the light source.
A spongy khaki colored head of 1.5 cm foams up and fades slowly, but eventually is nothing on my glass. No lacing, no edging, nothing after about 8 minutes in the glass.
Aroma is some sweet toffee and brown sugar , but is dominated by fusol , black peppery booze and hints of rye whiskey. Smells like a big beer. No hop character on the aroma.
First sip reveals a medium body with very fine , yet tingly carbonation. Definitely a bit slick on the mouthfeel , with a bit of a coating on my lips and tongue after each swallow.
Flavor is sweet and malty with some syrupy caramel and brown sugar dominating, hints of toffee mix in as well. Some spicy rye notes come through and the finish is surprisingly dry. Never any hops but there is some peppery booze. No warming though. Another very tasty and drinkable barrel aged barleywine from Barreled Souls. Gladly drink this one again.

Thanks for the kickoff and sharing your annual blend experience. I never did, but perhaps should consider this more, that beyond a Guinness / Harp at an Irish bar, or mixing a mound bar with my Deth’s Tar BA oatmeal stout. Also always nice catching up with Moe, especially with the outdoor opportunities dwindling with Winter approaching.

Dedicating by November for exploring the Beer Advocate Big Beer Box. Six of the eight are new breweries and beers, Firestone Walker and Transient the two breweries I have loved in the past but with new to me selections. Like many in the dedicated tasting thread, I’m starting with the one I suspect I might not like as much as the others, primarily due to also a new to me style (Fruited Kettle Sour) that looks more Slurpee than beer and Rum Barrels, but you only live once. Smiles everyone, smiles!

11/01/25 - (Can, Home) (Chicago, IL) Can Notes: Purchased via the Beer Advocate Fall 2025 Big Beer Box. Noncan date, but brewery released to the general public 10/17/25 per their Facebook post. Refrigerated upon receipt of shipment. 10.0% ABV 16 oz can. Rum BA Gluten Free Tiki Sour aged in rum barrels then conditioned on mango, pineapple, lime & ginger. Corporate Barrel established in Palmetto, Florida. Brewed and packaged at Corporate Ladder Brewing Company, 50 Capital Drive, Walstonburg, North Carolina.

Appearance: Poured into a large .50 liter tall tulip glass. First two color pour, the first a lemonade color followed by an orange citrus color with mega floaters of which I left a bit in the can. Head slowly emerged before pour finally settles into an orange slurpee bottom half, a clear/orange topped by a rust orange creamier fine head at the top. I think it looks good for what it’s supposed to be (never had this style before), but also looks like a poorly made slurpee. I did enjoy watching the metamorphosis. 2.75

    Aroma:
Tropical citrus plus Long Island ice tea rum. More like a cocktail or tropical drink than a beer, but it smells good beyond the rum, and I’m trying to go with the flow and rate for style. 3.75

    Taste:
Exactly as smells, more tropical cocktail than beer, but it is enjoyable starting with a nice citrus pineapple, backed by lime, mango and nominal rum, which works for me. Pleasant surprise. 4.0

    Mouthfeel:
Light gentle to slightly fizzy carbonation adds to the watery light body. Sweet, a bit more than my preference, but likely on point with the style. Rum, which I do not typically like, is subtle, which works for me, but the alcohol punch is definitely there; at or above the 10%. Citrus pineapple limes tart to finish. 3.75

    Overall:
This is for people who like a cocktail which I guess people classify as a beet, but is not like a beer. I liked more than I anticipated, but also likely won’t seek another of these down the road. Glad Beer Advocate broadened my beer scope. 3.75

16 oz can into a pokal.
L: Pours a clear caramel gold color with medium-light steady carbo, a thin white head that recedes to edge foam, light wispy full circumference lacing.
S: Caramel malts, a hint of bread dough, distant apple and a general orchard note.
T: A fruit bread malt note, lemon, lemon zest twang, lime zest, a gently sweet caramel note, it is fruity and has a long light yeasty halo. It is fairly bitter in the finish.
F: Crisp & bright, fairly snappy medium-light bodied mouthfeel with a long drying finish.
O: I really love the attitude of this beer. A bounty of flavors focusing in on laser-straight lemon-lime and yeasty bread dough malts. Both are riding high. A balanced and mildly intense tasting craft Lager. It is excellent to outstanding in its style.

    Allagash Haunted House
    [IMG]
Appearance: Very dark brown, big head.

Smell: Hard to pick much up, maybe some roasted malt.

Taste: Balanced arrival, roasted malts with a grassy undertone. Medium bodied. Gets a little hoppier with further sips. Finish gives more of the same, roasted malts with hops following.

Overall: Another single, I've liked other Allagash beers. This might be a touch old, canned around 3 months ago but was refrigerated. Pretty good black ale.

From a 355ml can poured into a pilsner glass. A one finger fine, off white head on a slightly hazy dark amber. The head diminished to a layer. Sheets of fine lacing.

Caramel malts in the nose. Tastes of bread and toast. Some fruit. A dry, very mildly bitter finish.
