These are the two Märzens. The Brewmeister said that the Kirta is also the Oktober-Fest Märzen which is for export. In Bavaria only beers servered at the Oktoberfest in Munich can be called Oktoberfest. But those exported do not apply. As I said I will be up there for the Kirta Fest on the 12th and will get this from them directly again. There has been a lot of this with US exports as we have seen with Andechs and Ettaler and more as well.

Tonight I went to Brewery Bayer, Grünen Baum. Really liked the beers, and the food was better than I would expect.

The guy who took us out there talked about a bus pulling up some weeks ago full of Untapped people. I think that was the tour group.

I had the Rotbier, which my friend said was not at all like a Nürnberger er ot, and I agreed. The normal Landbier was excellent and I had a few. It was a good night in the Steigerwald.

Our Untappd group was at Grunen Baum on the 17th, so he was likely referring to us.

I've been home from the trip almost a month now and have organized my notes, rated a bunch of the beers and places (reviews of the places to come), and am ready to provide a summary here.

Trip Klosser is the organizer and owner of the beer tour company, including this one that my wife and I took, (Because Untappd was the official host of the tour, two reps from that source, who also were in the group, had a hand in selecting some of the places that we visited.) However, Trip had some other things to do in preparation for an Oktoberfest tour, so he was only with us for a couple days in Munich before handing us over to an experienced German beer tour leader who he knew. He worked out well because he's a local and knows the language so that when 'bumps' in our agenda occurred, he handled them easily. And revisions to the itinerary did occur so that some of the places that we visited were almost last minute changes where ownership/management was gracious enough to receive us and we didn't have to sit on a bus and drink beer to kill time.

It was a full-schedule tour in Franconia/Bavaria with only one 'touristy' non-beer spot in the itinerary. We visited 26 beer-related places on the tour (no beer at the hops museum was a downer ), including 6 brewery tours. Plus my wife and I extended our time in Germany by 6 days so that another 7 places were visited where beer was involved (not including 4 homes/apartments where our family friend or her family were our hosts). Prior to all of that we departed from home 4 days early so we could spend time in London on the way to Munich to enjoy their beer culture plus help get ourselves tuned in to the time change. A tube workers strike in London complicated our logistics plans there so we only visited 3 pubs and enjoyed 9 beers while staying close to our hotel.

And the food..... (don't mention the food - it was all great wherever we had a meal.)

Combining the 33 beer-related places in Germany plus the 3 London pubs we got to enjoy 99 different beers, although many were style repeats from place to place because of the prevalence of Helles and Landbiers at so many places in Germany. All in all it was a great trip. The beer tour was well curated and I didn't have to do much planning, driving, looking at train schedules, etc, even for the period before and after the beer tour. I think it was well worth the extra cost of having someone do all of the planning, but to some of you, the planning is half of the fun. Take the time to travel and explore no matter how it all gets done!

EDIT: And we got to meet and dine/drink with @Bavarican !

Next time let me plan it with you. I work for beer. While some roles involve tasting beer as part of the job, such as in quality control or sales, consuming alcohol on the job is generally discouraged unless part of a formal tasting process. :beers:

The beer trip that is the subject of this thread was organized and conducted by Trip's Beer Trips, and the particular tour that my wife and I joined was hosted by Untappd. Two employees of Untappd were along on the tour with us, one took a lot of notes and one took a lot of photos. Consequently a couple of online reports with some pics have now been created, and are in the links below. Be forewarned that these are click-bait articles. But if any of you might be planning a trip to Germany, the thoughts and descriptions in the articles might be of some help in choosing what places you want on your itinerary. Enjoy! (See if you can find me in a couple of the pics. No prizes awarded though)

NOTE: The same person must have written both articles because there is some common verbiage in each.

Been to many of those places.

The guy mentioned at Bayer, José, is someone I now consider a great friend in the Bamerg area. The beer was excellent when he got us out there, the pork Kutlett I had there was outstanding. Too bad it is so hard to get to using public transportation.

Hausbrauerei Altstadthof in Nuremberg, for food (especially the small Nuremberg sausages) and bier, so much better that Hutt'n across the street. Wrong time of year for maibock which they do top notch but we will enjoy some on May Day  In west Nuremberg, we find the Schanzenbräu Schankwirtschaft to always be worth the visit.

Several firsts around Bamberg--we will be visiting 5 nights this time--ZumSternla in town, the Eichhorn and 3 in the Memmelsdorf area, in addition to staying up the hill beyond the Rose and Spezialkeller. Skipping Mahr Brau this trip after let downs in 2022 and 2024. Klosterbrau has been a Bamberg favorite since our first visit in the early 2000s. In addition to being closed on Mon and Tue, they don't open until 2pm on Wed-Fri now, 11a on the weekends. In terms of comparing the rauchbiers of Spezial, Klosterbrau and Schlenkerla, you are generally comparing two breweries single styles to Schlenkerla' 8+ styles or rauch.

Believe you are correct. And, I was so surprised to find it on the shelves of a liquor store in Illinois two years ago (Friar Tuck in Peoria)!

That's just a short ride on Tram 16 & 17 towards Munich, to the Augustinerkeller biergarten, a very nice one.

I totally agree! We've eaten and drank indoors, in the hallway to the courtyard, in the courtyard, out front, in the bar area (a slow Tuesday and as the weather was changing the wonderful elder barmaid set us up a table with a view and wisked us indoors). We were feasting on their terrific maibock. The rotbier rocks as well and the small Nuremberg sausages rocked.

I do our trip planning as well. In Germany we are nearly exclusively on public transit--ICE/IC/RE/RB/S/U/tram, bus, trolley. On the upcoming trip we sorta became edged into a car rental between Regensburg to Kelheim and on to Nuremberg which we will hold on to the car an additional day for a trip to the Wald of Forscheim--some crazy rail track overhaul between Regesburg and Nuremberg would have made public transit crazy and we had places that had to be visited.

Going to lock this thread as this specific trip package has long been over and some of the users being replied to aren't active at the moment.

Feel free to start a new, general thread on planing trips in Germany.

    Thanks!
