I have been slowly acquiring 2-3 bottles of at least one Trappist beer from every Trappist brewery on earth (over the past 4 years), I want to host a parallel tasting of all of these beers this December / January, but I've been unable to source even a single beer from Stift Engelszell from Austria. This tasting is for 7 people in my homebrewing club, so I need at least 2 330ml bottles, and ideally 3 bottles. I'd love to find Gregorius, but I'll settle for ANY beer from Stift Engelszell. I live in the greater Seattle area so I can source most any Washington beer and most beers from Oregon in trade. I realize I have exactly zero reputation points on here, but I'm reliable and know how to package and ship beer to reduce the risk of broken bottles as a homebrewer of 16 years. I'm motivated to ship quickly to make this event happen in the Dec - Jan timeframe (FINALLY!). -Adam
Really cool tasting idea. I miss the days when Trappist beers were all the rage. In fact you have inspired me....going to get a blue label or an Orval for thanksgiving, its been a while!
The beers/breweries to try to find now, while you still can are: St. Joseph's Abbey from Spencer, Mass (closed May 2022- GREAT 12/ Quad). Any beers from "Zundert" / Brouwerij Abdij Maria Toevlucht in the Netherlands -stopped brewing May this year, last Monks left in September. Stift Engelszell, Austria -but they were already crazy rare as they only produced 1,700 US BBL / year before they closed last December. They were the last German-speaking Trappist monastery in the world. There's a narrow window-in-time to get to try these beers if you haven't already.
I replied to your PM. Please contact your Austrian friend and see if he can get 3 of the 330 ml bottles of Gregorius (or a single 750ml if such a thing exists.) -I'd take anything from them, if Gregorius isn't possible. I'm tracking down the Floodland beer in question, which I think is very much doable. I'm hoping / expect to have found it by Monday. Adam
Wolffy, while I have a Swede in the thread... You don't have access to any Gotlandsdricke, do you? It's an ultra-rare style that I TRIED HARD to find while in Sweden, but failed to find. I visited 2 Systembolaget Flagship stores and still couldn't find an example; I was told that they're generally sold only seasonally and only at a couple of the Flagship stores. I know it's a very unique and not popular beer style; many Swedes who have had it have tried to talk me out of it, but it's one of those ultra historical, ultra-rare beer styles that I've never been able to taste, and it's been on my "bucket list". I usually succeed at finding my bucket list beers, but Gotlandsdricke has eluded me for 13-14 YEARS now. -Of course, I want to find the almost extinct beer style to make things difficult for myself.
