More data points usually equals a better representation of the establishment in question, but more, more recent data points are an even better reflection. Maybe my New Year's Resolution should be to review more places?
I see you have rated 0 places (true to your word) and 3 beers in 3 years, so are you referring to Untappd for your beer ratings? I am frustrated in that there are a few "Advocates" i am familiar with who love to yuk it up in forums but refuse to contribute their time to beer and place ratings. I can place a small degree of reliance on the Yelp (Untappd) ratings for beers but a number of us rely on Place ratings on Beer Advocate when traveling when choosing where to have a beer and dine. You know who you are @Resistance88
Who, me?!?!?! If i am on Vacation the last thing i care to do is waste time writing about something on a website. By the time i am finished i am too drunk to care . i forget where I've been and what I've drank ,but the bonus is i get to visit a place twice for the first time and have a beer there You can text me for recs whenever you're out in Europe and I'll give you info
Yup, you'll have to look me up on "Dumcrapped" (same user name/id/profile) to get all of my 10,000 & more beer ratings. I recently tried to add a pic from my compooters' C drive to my latest review but couldn't figure out how to do it. I'd rate more beers here but I'd have to create the listings for many of the area breweries (BKS, Alma Mader, Discourse, etc.) & it's already enough to do just to rate them on "Dumcrapped", plus I'm still hoping & wishing for the day that I can press a magic button and all my "Dumcrapped" beer check-ins can be transferred to BA. I've had this discussion with Todd in the past and I know the day will probably never come due to the amount of work/logistics/etc., and I'm not thinking it would be possible to carry-over the extensive review comments but to at least be able to migrate the check-in and star rating would be enough for me. Then again, since there are so many area/regional brewery beers that don't even have a listing on BA, I think Todd would agree that it would be impossible to simply have a program that would be able to create new BA listings from "Dumcrapped" listings. And then there's the whole issue of various vintages of the same-named beers so I'll try and rate more beers here but it seems a duplication of efforts, especially if I've got to transfer a pic from phone to compooter, copy my extensive review and the star rating and......hey, I need another beer already.....how much time did I just spend? In short, I'm too far down "Dumcrappeds" road to try and recreate all my ratings over here on BA, even if there was also a listing in existence to add to. And after saying all that, it's time for another beer.....I mean........."DRINK"!
I almost always will review a new place I am visiting. I love to look at places here when I travel to an unfamiliar state/country to find places worth visiting. I wish more BA's would contribute.
Thanks for your response and your background on your ratings conversion conversations with Todd. I was encouraged by a former Advocate to join him on Untappd and i did rate beers on BA and Untappd for a minute but stopped that as i found it tedious and time consuming and i am retired LOL! Additionally, there are a handful of us that are interested in exporting our ratings data but the last i can remember reading is that this will not happen in the near future due to priorities. So yeah what you are looking for will likely never happen.
Thanks. It would take waaaay too long to explain but here's the condensed version (don't laugh folks). I got onto Dumcrapped in Feb. 2017 when a coworker tipped me off about the app. I was livid that nobody, friend/coworker/etc. had alerted me that the app had been in existence for 7 years when I could have had another few thousand brews rated by the time 2017 rolled around. Within a few months to me, it became apparent that the Dumcrapped app was skewed & worthless due to 95% of users only giving a beer a star rating without explaining WHY they thought a beer was a 3 or a 4 or a 5 star rating, one more percent only gave a beer a star rating plus a few flavor profile choices, and another percent gave a beer a star rating, a few flavor profile choices and maybe an uninformative comment like, "this is good", "I like this beer", or "top stuff!" Let alone all the Dumcrapped users that always rated every beer they've ever had as a 5 star rating. Which is why I got onto BA years ago besides telling anyone & everyone that you can't use any Dumcrapped ratings for shit since they're so worthless. And here I was, from the start in 2017 on Dumcrapped, knocking myself out, giving a star rating, flavor profile choices and extensive review comments on almost every beer I checked into. After a few years I was stunned to find out that even most of my Dumcrapped friends didn't even bother to read my reviews or look at my flavor profile choices. At least here on BA when someone checks into a brew you've got the capability to rate multiple qualities instead of a single star rating and I'll think about recreating all my Dumcrapped ratings over here if only for the check-ins and star ratings on the categories but if'n I started today, doing about umpteen brews a day (not counting all of the dozens/hundreds of local/area/regional brews I'd have to painstakingly recreate by scratch because they ain't here) well......it'd take me years........ .....and after all that 'sed.......I need another beer.......er......."DRINK"!
There was a time when I leaned pretty heavily on places. Post-2020 it feels like the reviews / ratings have dropped dramatically and it's more of a legacy feature. I could be totally wrong on that, but that's how it feels. I still use it, as sometimes there are hidden gems that have high numbers of ratings in places I'm traveling to or high rating scores with a significant number of actual reviews and not one rating five stars. These days it's a data source I pull from to see if there's anything interesting, but hardly the last word. I'm still adding ratings and reviews here for whatever that is worth. Hopefully that helps someone at some point. I find untappd's verified venues is 25/50/25 useful / noise / junk. Many legit spots publish their menus to untappd and that can be helpful, also some legit spots that aren't really established or have a great rep are more discoverable. Most ends up as noise, and there's the occasional spot that for some reason shells out to publish their miller lite, lagunitas and seltzer menus there. Bro, if you want a video board that badly learn a little HTML, that'll save you big money. I use it to see what people are checking into potentially interesting places verified or not because you can sometimes find shares that way, and places that are under the radar. My strategy lately is identify 2-3 ringers and when I'm there ask bartenders and fellow enthusiasts what's good in the area. You can find some pretty under the radar and newer spots that way.
I'll review places if I'm going somewhere just to get out for a bit and it's the only place I hit up, or if it's a place that I'm somewhat regular at. Otherwise, it's too much of a blur to give an accurate account of. I also don't review beers that I've had while out. I'm much more into enjoying being out than taking detailed notes to later upload to the site. That being said, I do find place reviews to be valuable when seeking out new spots, so I guess I'm part of the problem.
I do the same. I try to make sure that all my "locals" are listed and updated with new beers, place photos, etc. But there is a limit though, to any BA activity. When it starts to feel like a job then it's time to step back. Having said that, so far this weekend I have added two places, reviews to follow when approved.
I find myself traveling frequently—far more than I ever imagined—and have had my share of layovers across the country. So I’ll submit place additions based on where I’ve been or passed through.
Same. I’m fairly surprised how often I find good places that have been open for years that are not in the database
I agree. I think a lot of BAs overthink reviewing in general. We are not being asked for the definitive "last word" on a beer or a place. With regards to place reviews we are being asked "why would I choose to go there?" rather than somewhere else. Earlier today I added a dive bar in Toronto. When I review it I will mention that they have a good selection of import and domestic craft on tap and in cans. Just that differentiates it form the other 100 or so dive bars in Toronto that don't carry craft beer. If someone wants to add a more in depth review then have at it. The barrier to writing a review is low because I already added the place, which is a more difficult process.
