Sadly I don't really know this brewery. It is on the other side of Germany on the Polish and Czech borders.

Sometimes I forget just how good a beer is, and it is like the first time!

    Eschenbacher Urtyp Helles

Pleasant cereal aroma. Light and spritzy on the tongue. Taste is on the sweet side, and it's not a complex brew. But as a Helles it's got plenty of malt and finishes with a crisp hoppy note. A mild bitterness in the aftertaste, sort of resiny and gummy, takes care of the sweetness. Here's another perfectly drinkable German beer that would be unknown except for distributor Webster Barnes putting this case together for Costco.

For me this is the crown jewel of them all. You should try it on tap.

Yeah, it is definitely in the collection of jewels.

100% with you on that. I usually enjoy a couple of those Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

When I lived back East, my local in Baltimore (Max's) had it on tap regularly. They would even have the eisbock version on draft occasionally.

Now that I live in the PNW, maybe I will see it on tap once a year. Very sad.

Can you tell I’m feeling nostalgic lately? This is another style that doesn’t seem to get the attention it deserves. And wow! This is another great one from the Old World.

@Bavarican by chance might you know anything about…

Brauerei Finster from Burghaslach Germany? Or leads for how to learn more about them? I have a family connection and precious little information about them. Unfortunately they ceased operations before I could visit or try their beers.

I think they were in business 1687-1993. I know they made, at least, a Pils, a Mazen, and a Voll beer.

Andechs Doppelbock 7.1%. Great time of year for German strong beer. Prost!

    Schloßherrn Weisse Dunkel from Irlbach
Interesting aroma of roast grain, wood, and a whiff of smoke. Plenty of spritz on the tongue but dissipating carbonation. This stuff is really rather sweet. It tastes more like fruity tea than beer. Very odd flavors and then a scratchy, bitter dishwater aftertaste. Probably my least favorite of all the excellent brews in the Costco Biergarten box.

    Spaten Optimator

This doppelbock has been a long-time favorite of mine. It seems that Spaten may be brewing this seasonally now, whereas it used to be available year-round in MN and WI (if not other spots). This bottle was packaged in December 2024, and is one of my last ones. Thankfully, it's not showing too much of its age. Optimator disappeared around here by spring 2025 at the latest and hasn't shown up again.

I'm hoping that it shows up early next year. I guess we'll see.

I've seen this less and less as well but attributed it mostly to today's beer drinkers being less curious and knowledgeable about styles beyond IPAs and Stouts. There is just less demand and it hurts availability of great beers like Optimator or Aventinus.

You are 100% on target about Dunkel Weizen and Weihenstepher's especially. It unique and enjoyable. Too many miss out by never approaching this style. Tucker Brewing here in GA makes one of the few Dunkel Weizen around and I love reading reviews from people who have never had it. They are pleasantly surprised by how approachable and enjoyable it is.

Dancing Gnome Brewery (Pittsburgh, PA) - Altbier

Nice toasted malt flavor with balancing bitterness in the finish. Solid beer and highly drinkable.

Cross posted from the Lagers thread.

I brought this one back from my trip to Germany in September after touring the brewery. It was room temp in the brewery's store, and has been refrigerated since arriving home. It is 12% abv, and has a Best Before date of 03-24-35. (Yes, 2035.) I expected it to be a concentrated taste of a doppelbock, and that's exactly what I got. A bit rough tasting when it was cold but it smoothed out as it warmed.

Beers like this should never be had when they are cold. Red wine temp for bock beers are the best.

Did the carbonation suffer from transatlantic travel? Doesn't appear to have any life.
