It may not be seasonal, but I love cervezas all year round, and when you're either buying in bulk, or at a big name grocery store, craft isn't always an option. So let's get down to the nitty-gritty. What is the best macro cerveza?
Mexican lagers such as Corona, etc. are AAL beers that just happen to be brewed in Mexico. So, from a beer style perspective just AAL beers. A favorite AAL beer for me is Yuengling Lord Chesterfield (Chetty). That beer gets my vote. Cheers!
Bohemia Negra . End of story Everything else is water that people gotta add shit( lemon, salt, vanilla, pretzelz, pecans, walnuts, pistachio, mint, chamoy, pepper, celery) to make it edible.
It would be interesting to do a blind taste test with these four. I do feel like the reason most of us are in the habit of dropping a lime into a corona is because of the complete lack of taste.
...Modelo Negra is my go-to (primarily in Mexican restaurants)... ...per their web site: ...no mention of corn or being an AAL...
Personally I gravitate towards Negra Modelo or Pacifico. And yes, I like squeezing a lil' bit of fresh lime into 'em.
I don't drink any of these beers on a regular basis, but if I'm in a Mexican restaurant and not in the mood for a margarita, I'll choose a Negra Modelo so I can get some flavor. I voted Other just so I can see the poll results because I'm curious to follow along to see the outcome.
Bohemia, to really class it up. Tecate, when I could get it in Califas. Whatever’s cold and in a caguama, when in Mexico!
From the modelousa website, with some emphasis in bold by me: Brewed longer to enhance the flavors, this Munich Dunkel-style Lager gives way to a rich flavor and remarkably smooth taste. Modelo Negra contains Water, Barley Malt, Non-malted Cereals and Hops. https://www.modelousa.com/products/negra No specificity as regards which non-malted cereals are used. Could be corn. Could be rice (the adjunct used in brewing Budweiser). Cheers!
For me, it’ll be one of these based on mood and/or availability: Negra Modelo Bohemia Dos Equis Ambar
Bohemia Pilsener (Clara). This beer was the best Mexican lager in the 70s when I drank it at Mexican Restaurants in San Diego. It has survived the acquisition by Heineken. I drank it on vacation in Mexico, and thought it was better than most of the craft beer lagers I have tried. There's a Bohemia Vienna that I didn't love. Is that the beer that @keilerdunkeland @Resistance88 refer to as Bohemia Negra? Google's AI describes Bohemia Vienna as oscura/negra but I'd say that's wrong. It's similar to stablemate XX amber.
A quick visit to their website shows 3 beers- Pilsner/clara Oscura (classified as a Vienna) Weizen the last 2 I would like to try - I already know I like the 1st
