The US importer for Tucher is Wetten Importers. The Doppelbock is not listed as being part of their portfolio on their website:

    Prost!

The name is Bajuvator, and it's very good.
    Prost.

Finally something I have to hunt down--glad to see everyone already discussed Schlenkerla.

Upon further review; Bajuvator is a seasonal, available October through March, this is why it's not of the Tucher website.
    Prost.

The question is whether the US importer is actually bringing in the Doppelbock (Bajuvator?). Do you know for a fact this brand is imported to the US? Have you purchased this brand in the US?

    Cheers!

I reviewed and WBAYDN-ed Tucher Bajuvator on April 5th. I can't remember where I purchased it, most likely in Massachusetts. Prost.

My guess is that they get non-smoke malt from Bamberger Mältzerei. Their raw barley is sourced from there.

The Heinzlein beer is smokey. The grist from a smoke beer is resparged, resulted in low gravity runnings. I don't know if they repitch yeast from the Märzen as they do in the Helles. Yeah, it could be just marketing, a legal issue, or Mattias Trum following historical conventions, history is one of his passions.

The Heinzlein beers are not "supposed" to be smokey. The Hansla version of the beer is supposed to be smokey. I haven't had either. That Beerwanderer reviewer claims it was "surprisingly light on the smoke" [emphasis mine] with "just a hint of smoke" - which indicates that the reviewer might not have approached it with the proper background info. So maybe that hint of it was psychosomatic given the brewer and/or a product of the roasted malt... or perhaps the same situation as with the Helles (as you mentioned).

Next time in Bamberg I'll buy a bottle at the REWE we shop at.

I was wrong about the reviewer not knowing the background. Here's the Hansla beer (and he claims the Heinzlein Helles had no hint of smoke):

In my mind they are the king of rotbier in Franconia. Loyal following among Nuremberg folks.

Here's the current description of Aecht Schlenkerla Weichsel:
For our Aecht Schlenkerla Weichsel Rotbier, we dry the malt over fire with high-quality cherry wood (not over beech wood fire as with classic smoked beer). In contrast to the spicy beech-smoked malt, the cherry wood smoked malt has a fruity, almost sweet smoke aroma and provides a copper-red color in the glass. The finest aroma hops add berry notes to the multi-layered smoke flavor.

Wow! Convenient! I just returned from a trip to Nuremberg and sampled a few Rotbier's while there!
