Clear brown pour with reddish tones and mahogany notes depending on the light; opaque brown in the glass; thick, densely spongy head; khaki hued. Rock solid malt-forward nose; roasted grains with touches of roasted nuts; a little cola and brown sugar. Stunning taste; toasted grains giving notes of toffee and caramel; brown sugar; roasted nuts; muted booziness. Heavy body; thick and velvety soft; chewy; subliminal alcohol warmth.

What a marvelous English-style barleywine. It is big and beautiful with a full flavor and sumptuous roundess to the mouthfeel. Well-balanced, amazingly delicious.

...sheesh...I keep forgetting about threads like this...I certainly do love a good barleywine (it used to be I had some sort of crazy, irrational under-appreciation for the style not too long ago)...eh, never too old to change one's tune...regardless, a phenomenal beer from Frank...

Figured this would fit here - loads of caramel and molasses, with some C-hops resiny pine. Magnificent, IMHO.

PS: it’s been a minute since I’ve had this, as evidenced by my review below that I updated today.

Pours a crystal clear burnished copper color with a foamy tan head that isn’t shy about hanging around and provides big splotches of lacing. Gorgeous beer.

The nose features big caramel and molasses notes, and there’s also some C-hop aromas, especially pine. Sign me up.

The taste is rightfully focused on the caramel and molasses flavors, as it should be, but it’s that little bit of resiny pine that provides balance and really elevates this beer for me.

The mouthfeel is full and edges towards creamy. This is better than I remembered - and I liked it a LOT before. World class stuff, IMHO.

Finally cracked my bottle of Dystopias (Batch 2) from Free Will Brewing in PA. The amazing @DIM sent this to me a while ago. An amazing still barleywine that comes in at 20.1% ABV. Spent over two years in barrels. To get to this ABV, they used multiple yeast strains and multiple sugar additions. Thanks so much, Dan! What a fantastic beer!

The taste is just phenomenal. Sherry, bourbon, vanilla, cherry, brown sugar, toffee, molasses, and chocolate. Bloody amazing.

Those are great! @Ozzylizard sent me one in a real generous Stout/Barleywine LIF salvo. Nice to keep on the shelf to drink on special occasions. Not sure whether they're a Strong Ale or Barleywine.

The line is pretty fuzzy. Strong ales and barleywines tend to differ in gravity (and therefore ABV), with strong ales being a bit lower. Otherwise, they overlap considerably. Given that this one is super high ABV, seems more like a barleywine. It also seems common to put barleywine/stout hybrids in the strong ale category, which is still a bit odd to me.
