Recently I noticed that quite a few of my beer glasses are scratched up, some worse than others, and I'm considering just tossing them and getting some new ones. Esp my nonic and Pils glasses. They're old but aren't chipped or cracked, just marred from use, cleaning and some have a haze on the glass that absolutely will not come off. They never look clean and I only hand wash these beer glasses. Should I replace them?

I would for sure, but maybe that’s just me. I love a crystal clear clean glass paired with a crystal clear beer :beers:

Toss? Those wind up on my work benches and desks with pens, pencils, markers, rules, zip ties, etc., in them.

I'm slowly working from front to rear of the corner kitchen cabinet shelf that holds all of my beer glasses, occasionally tossing some from the front. The most used ones are in front and have become clouded and difficult to clean. I'm not a purist who demands a clear glass so I continue to use them, and I pull clear glasses from the back when we have guests. Strangely, I did recently notice that the glasses are becoming more clear since we got a new water softener. Go figure!

If they are branded glassware they are easier to replace than unbranded. You cant just walk into a Walmart or Dollar Tree and find a nonic point or snifter glass or any beer glass there. I had to get a unbranded Nonic Pint from Crate and Barrel. Dollar Tree had them years ago but not anymore. Walmart doesnt have them. Buying any glass online sucks since the shipping cost is so high for a small item plus they can arrive damaged. The options at the retail stores are limited unless you go to a brewery and buy their glasses from them.

Yep. Soft water helps, and we have a good system as well. I hand dry them as well. Some of the glasses are older than dirt so that might simply be it. I dunno.

Yep. And online its sets of glasses not singles. Otherwise eBay, Etsy, that sorta jive.

Bed, Bath, and Beyond I got unbranded glasses from in the past but they are gone and are just online now. I also got beer glasses from Marshalls and TJ Maxx but i havent seen those glasses I got from there in years. Got the Spiegeleau IPA Glass 2 piece set from TJ Maxx maybe 10 years ago So yes the options for unbranded glassware have indeed dwindled down. Crate and Barrel if you have one near you is still a good bet.

I wouldn't but I don't toss anything that still has use. I'm old and scratched up myself but can still get the job done.

I broke BOTH of my Spiegeleau glasses hand drying them. Arg! But I didn't get cut. I'm done with those.

Are the scratches on the inside or outside? If inside your are cleaning to hard. Did you try vinegar for the haze?

My favorite, actually my only pint glass has a ring from stouts and porters.
Just won't come out and I dint think of myself as having old issues but it kind of irks me.
Was just looking at a gift set with a new glass in it the other day so probably will pull the trigger and replace it[IMG]

Those aren't scratches, they're battle scars. If they're on the outside, that is. If they're on the inside, think of them as nucleation points. :grinning:

Seriously, I have hard water. A lot of the glasses I often use have that patina that you can't get rid of. I still use them, but if I'm posting a pic on BA I'll use one of the specialty glasses I own. Hand washed with Dove Power Wash and a long-handled sponge before each use, then washed and hand-dried and put away scrupulously clean. (And the absolute most beautiful glass I own is a Spiegelau Adina stemmed beer glass.)

My slightly anal, neurotic method of glass washing has kept my beer glasses looking decent. First, I put a thin hard bar of Irish Spring on the inside of glass, fill it part way up with water, then vigorously shake the glass with my hand covering the open end until I have a grey soapy concoction which I then rinse out. I repeat this process until every little bit of dry hard brown beer sludge has been purged. I douche the glass with rubbing alcohol to dissolve any lingering soap residue and then thoroughly rinse the glass with hot water. Finally I dry it inside and out with paper towels. Have to carefully fold the paper towel in order to fit it deep down inside the glass or else I end up with an unsightly grey ring of water staining.

I have horrible water here, all city water comes from wells. Stains everything, even at some of the car washes in town. The city built a treatment plant to take the arsenic out, so yay for us! :sunglasses:

Calcium deposits are the worst. Needless to say I no longer drink water from the fridge dispenser!

    :beers:

PS for my fellow Leinie fans out there https://shop.leinie.com/ used to have great deals on glassware with very reasonable shipping prices. At times, both https://guinnesswebstore.com/ and https://sierranevada.com/shop/drinkware have had good deals as well.
