I settled for drier January. I've only had four beers so far, though the first one was a 25oz 14% ABV barleywine, and all were 12%+.

This is my third Dry January. It's a nice reset for me. This year I'm also training for my first half marathon, so no booze has been quite helpful..

I selected Maybe in the poll, but in my case that means 'damp.' I had a beer on New Years day, a gin & tonic three days later, and a daily NA beer since then. We're a third of the way in, and I just ordered a case of NA beers online, so I think I'll make it.

I’m coasting between trainings right now, but I’ve done a few dry or barely damp weeks leading into halfs and fulls and it definitely helps.

I have indirectly participated in Dry January and would previously never willingly have done so. Last June, my wife and I decided to try the carnivore diet for 90 days, which entails no alcohol, in particular beer, due to the carbs.

We have been on it since June 9, and I have lost 54 lbs., or 25% of my weight. During this time, I have had two beers, on Thanksgiving Day. Prior to starting this, I routinely had two beers before dinner every day, followed by one or two bourbons after dinner (for years).

Aside from really missing my Belgian ales, I am not depriving myself, compared to previous attempts at weight loss during my adult life. I have two ribeye steaks nearly every day. Bacon, eggs, and butter are on the menu as well.

I am not going to give beer up for good; matter of fact, I have added a few to the beer closet during this time. At some point, I will have a beer, but not as frequently as I was accustomed to. Bourbon too. Will probably enjoy it in a different manner than before.

Two ribeye steaks a day!?!? Does your cardiologist know about this?:smirk:

What about your accountant? Are you buying subprimals from a wholesaler and breaking them down yourself?

Well, this thread sure took a turn.

Meanwhile I'm consuming mass quantities of meat. And pasta. And Pilsner Urquell. Daily.

    Am I doing this wrong?

If it was possible, I would start every day with a full Irish and a Guinness, followed by a leisurely cup of coffee, and then decide if I maybe wanted to go to work.

Absolutely. I had my annual appt with him last week. He told me to keep doing it.

The fat to protein ratio in a choice ribeye is approximately 1:1, which is perfect. The fat becomes your body's fuel, instead of carbs, which I do not consume.

Ha, good point. I normally go for Choice, and sometimes Prime. If no alternative, I buy Select. We are considering an alternative to precut steaks that I have seen on YouTube, which is buying the uncut option, and then cutting ourselves. Will likely save a few dollars per pound.

OTOH, grocery shopping on carnivore is much simpler than before, and we are saving from all stuff we are no longer buying. So the net effect is not as bad as you might think.

Investing in a half cow or pig with a farmer is a great way to stock the freezer and also be forced to learn new cooking techniques to actually have something that you'd want to eat. Don't let them cheat you by not including the offal. You figure out how much of a carnivore/omnivore you are when you cook and eat it.

Also, you might as well eat dog food if you're buying select. If I'm having a steak, it has to be at the very least choice, and even then, I'm looking for the most marbled piece in the cooler.

Ha, depends. I would cut out the pasta for sure. JK

I took a spin through this thread earlier today, knowing that there was a wide variety of input.

Some folks are not inclined to have a dry January, while some are. I never intended to have one. Some folks are using the dry period as an opportunity to lose weight. I saw one post about having only 1,000 calories per day, while stepping up an exercise program. That's the traditional approach. On carnivore, there is no attention given to calories, per se. You instead focus on maintaining a fuel-driven fat to protein ratio. You also focus on building muscle mass, which is boosted by the steady consumption of animal-based protein.

At any rate, it has been fun. My wife and I started this on a 'let's see how it goes" approach. She only did it with me to keep me company, since she didn't need to lose any weight at 103 lbs., but she has lost 10. She's happy. I'm happy. And I do have a closet full of beer to partake from at some point in the future. Also have a well-stocked bourbon, rye, and scotch bunker to enjoy, with no carbs!
