Looking, smelling and tasting like a glass of Sunday morning Mimosa, Seattle’s Elysian Full Contact Imperial Hazy IPA is a great and interesting NEIPA! A Northwest Northeast IPA!

It seems most of the Northwest IPA’s I’m encountering are hurting on the canning dates…. This one with an “Experience by December 23, 2024” date, over one year past the preferred drink-by date. Full Contact holds up a lot better than yesterday’s dumper, and is still fruity and delicious. At 8.8% ABV, the “orangeynous” of Full Contact really does mask any booze well, you might even think this is a 6% ABV brew. Nicely done!

Still trying to figure out the spooky can graphics, don’t let this one scare you off. I’m serious on that Mimosa remark, I need to try this back-too-back with some juice and Champagne one of these days, there really is a lot of similarity here - factoring in that it’s a beer of course. Cheers!

 

1) Sierra Nevada Springfest (6.0% canned 12/5/2025): An IPA from California with Centennial, Citra, and CTZ for flavors of lemon, citrus peel, pineapple, and floral notes.
versus
2) New Belgium Lightning Blaze (7.3% no canning date): AN IPA from Colorado with Cashmere, Sabro, and HBD1019 for flavors of orange, pineapple, banana, and mango. (Mismatched the two blind)

Sierra Nevada versus New Belgium IPA Battle. First is Sierra Nevada Springfest. Bright lemon, citrus and floral notes. Reviewed this yesterday and many more to come I'm sure.
Next is New Belgium Lightning Blaze. First go at this. Some Sabro for that banana coconut flavor here is notable upfront. Also some orange and then listed to have HBD, but I'm sure they meant HBC for some berry and stonefruit notes. The Sabro is present, but not overpowering and balances nicely with the tropical notes. I'd give this a thumbs up from New Belgium. I've always thought New Belgium consistently produces some of the best macro IPAs out there.
Winner: New Belgium Lightning Blaze

Tonight we feasted on some homemade carrot hummus, launch, air fried meatballs in a spicy zhoug tahini sauce, along with Spanish gigante beans and some pita breads. Mushrooms too.

With Breakside-Salt n Straw Salted Caramel Stout.
