Appearance: Clear dark gold, good head.

Smell: Just like vanilla extract, straight vanilla with a hint of alcohol.

Taste: Hits with vanilla right away, a little light breadiness is mixed in there with the vanilla. Actually pretty balanced, vanilla is there but not overpowering. Medium bodied.

Overall: A beer that was gifted to me, I wasn't expecting much but it's not bad. Not really something I'd pick up on my own but interesting to try.

    Our relationship has been saved!

I wasn’t expecting to see Double Sip on our trip to our favorite watering hole, but there it is. Main reason for coming was to get one of the GF’s favorite beers, Blueberry Muffin from Great Notion.

I was curious about what is in the glass - which is a Perennial Abraxas barley wine aged in whiskey barrels. Why is it co-opting the name of the brewers big stout? Because apparently it has chilis and cacao nibs involved in its making.

Smells more like a quad - likely due to the sweet bourbon notes pairing with the barley. Deeper down there is a more American pairing of barley and hop - though maybe it’s some cinnamon and cacao coming through, as it’s a bit earthy.

Taste is a bit too sweet, but the coconut of the barrel is coming through nicely. Fig, raisin, then some actual dessert wine all follow the mostly barrel opening. A slightly tangy ending, though macaroon-like sweetness fills back in the linger.

Lots of barrel is nice, but this is much more an after dinner beer than before lunch. I could easily pair this with a dense whiskey sidecar, as well.

Well, I wouldn’t know it was my second favorite IPA if it was new to me :stuck_out_tongue:

Actually, it is my 3rd highest rated beer here, an equal percent point above and below Parabola and BCBA Coffee Stout, respectively.

It might could go in the revisit thread, but I feel that is for beers you neglect versus can’t get. I will see if it is still top tier worthy, at least. Cheers!!

Traquair Jacobite Scotch Ale, 8% ABV. Pours deep brown, with a 1+ finger beige head which left no lacing. Aroma is coriander, roasted malt, and bread. Taste is roasted malt and bread, moderate bitterness, no sweetness, lingering char. Decent mouthfeel, overall very good to excellent adjacent.

Got this at a local liquor store that has an aisle of old craft. Looked like all of the beer was 2022 and older, some from 2019. The World Wide Stout had the old label design, didn't check the year. This beer is from 2022.

Mostly clear, golden yellow body; extremely dense small-bubble carbonation; thick and densely sudsy white head, very long-lasting with thick strands and rings of foam sticking to the glass. Very nice nose; light biscuit-like malt carrying a fine layer of pine resin with a hint of tropical fruit. The taste has little malt presence but does offer a nice dose of bitter pine resin and notes of orange and red grapefruit. Medium body; sharp and crisp on the palate; semi-dry feel.

A solid west coast-style India pale ale. This one may be a tad past its prime with the minimal malt flavor, but is still quite enjoyable overall.

    Dutchess Ales' Augur English-Style Porter • 4.6% ABV • 29 IBUs

Short version: Looks great, smells great, feels great, tastes like burnt oak logs pulled out of the BBQ pit.

It's just so bitter, so earthy and so disappointing. American breweries suck at nailing the British styles IMO, and this one goes on that heap of below-average attempts. There's no date code on the can, so it's possible I've got a really old version here, but either way, I won't buy this one again. I will, however, give a different Dutchess Ales' brew a chance b/c this one is clearly well made ... in fact, the aroma is quite promising with nice sweet notes of raisin bread and fruitcake. The issue is none of that shows up in the flavor.

Great appearance; clear and lightly golden color; sparse carbonation yet producing a sharp and sculpted head, rocky; crystallized strands of foam inside the glass. Gorgeous malt base scent; delicate light malt with biscuit undertones; muted yet alluring floral notes with ethereal esters. Light malt base with a distinct, peppery hop presence; dried grass with thyme and hints of sage. Medium-light feel; crisp and smooth; lightly biting dryness.

A superb, rock-solid pilsner exuding balance and distinction. Clean and crisp overall.

Hitachino Espresso Stout • American Imperial Stout • 7% ABV

Not a bad beer, and you can definitely taste the coffee, which is a good thing for this coffee fiend. Unfortunately, I've a hunch this bottle is quite old (1-2+ years?), and everything about it comes off as stale. Still, it's solid with a sweet and enticing nose and enough malt sweetness in the flavor to balance the darker, bitter notes. I'm hoping the beer opens up and shows a bit more sweetness as it warms in the glass, which it will because I'm sipping this one very slowly.

Blackish-brown pour, clear; coal-black and opaque in the glass; thick head, rich yet frothy and creamy in appearance, long-lasting. Relatively mild aroma; soft dark grain hints with a bit of char; faint chocolate notes. Bold yet balanced flavors; modestly sweet milk chocolate offset with mild grain char bitterness. Heavy yet silky smooth mouthfeel; semi-sweet character.

The brewery calls this a double strong American stout. No argument here. Damn good!

    ------------------------------------------------

...it seems like a fair number of Fort George beers have become available locally...and like with Russian River beers, I am hard-pressed to find a bad one...

Alright I'm putting my money where my mouth is, for those keeping track we have now added SIX pilsners, keep 'em coming...

Happy Saturday everyone, I hope this week was good to you all. Olympic hockey is on, the snow is finally melting, we got taxes done today, it’s a little warmer; things are on the upswing currently.

It is Valentines Day, which years ago started our almost weekly trend of breakfast for dinner. So to keep it special instead of my normal pancakes, Mrs Phisher snagged her parents waffle maker and we make waffles with my pancake batter.

Today I continue to work through my @FRANKHAZE box so in light of the string of pils love that opened up this thread I will continue with more…

Good Word Brewing - Die Todd Die (Czech Pils 5%)

Nice looking beer; crystal clear first pour; deep gold with perfectly white head; compact head with some fine ring lacing.

Nose is a gentle aromatic mix of grain, fresh bread and herbal snappy spice character.

Taste is slightly muted compared to nose but it pulls its weight nicely; good malt character; more complex than expected, bread with some deeper crust and toastiness; hops are old school earthy and full with lingering black pepper.

Mouthfeel is a star for me; I’m not sure if it is, but I’d guess it was decoction mashed; it’s got that big full feel malt feel but finishes so clean, light, and dry; the bitterness is very pleasant is earth like and lingers , being very noticeable without overpowering the beautiful malty depth.

This beer is very enjoyable; well made through and through, it would verge closer to perfect if it was a tad lower in abv for me but that's just nit picking and personal preference. Thanks for the share Frank.

    @ATL6245

Not sure what mood will strike me tomorrow, whether it’ll be something familiar to enjoy Sunday or if I’ll be feeling adventurous and crack open another beer from Georgia via Frank. Cheers everyone!

Jester King's The Satyr • German pilsner • 4.8% ABV • with Hallertauer Mittelfrüh hops

Officially this is a new-to-me beer by the BA.com database, but I suspect this is Jester King's previously named "German-Style Pilsner" that they renamed "The Satyr." I can't prove that, so I'll chalk it up as a newbie.

Either way, it's fantastic. Lots of bready sweet malt presence in the nose and plenty in the flavor with the malt flicking back and forth between a bready and cracker-like flavor. The hops are both green and peppery with the aroma being more citrusy (lemon-lime) and the flavor being more black pepper. The activity in the glass is nuts, and it because it's pushing up a constant 1/4-inch head of foam, every sip starts off softened by drinking through the head. Beautiful brew all around for the pils lover.

    Ridgeway Lump of Coal

500mL bottle stamped best before L27 216 poured into a nonic pint glass at fridge temp 7.5% ABV. The beer pours dark brown bordering on black with minimal light penetration and light brown head. The head recedes to a thin cap and leaves a sticky coat of lacing. The aroma is mild with chocolate and ashy, deeply roasted malt. The taste is bittersweet roasted malt with notes of chocolate & dark fruit followed by a tangy, mildly bitter finish. The feel is thin to medium bodied with just less than average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, a good FES.

    Cheers all!
