I think @ChicagoJ missed two important hosting history notes: who hosted the very last NBS, and who hosted the very first NBW, marking the transition from NBS to NBW?

I'm kidding (because obviously I know the answer). But seriously, very cool dive by CJ (not to be confused with @cjgiant ).

The biggest problem here is beer shopping. I don't know the stores, and I don't leave the hotel much except for work (and I don't have a vehicle here). So while I have had new beers this year (15 and counting), it's not always on Sunday, it's usually ratings instead of full reviews, and if I'm out in town - even on a Sunday - I'm far less likely to pop into the thread (or WBAYDN?), as I'm not a big fan of posting on my phone (and hence more ratings than reviews).

If any BAs in the DC area want to steer me toward some spots (preferably Navy Yard) for some shopping, I wouldn't mind - for new beer, certainly, but I certainly wouldn't complain if I could get my hands on some OTWOA or SOS. And if I do chime into the thread with a new one, I'll make my presence known.

    Cheers!

Appearance: Super clear gold, big head, beautiful!

Smell: Starts with grapefruit, then moves to pine.

Taste: Mild sweetness, then nicely bitter grapefruit and pine notes, balanced with a malt base. Medium bodied. Finishes with lingering citrus bitterness.

Overall: Another long-time want obtained through online ordering. Beautiful looking beer and very nice old-school DIPA flavor. Should have gotten more than 1 can!

Just glad you could take a break from your obviously hectic sandwich delivery work in order to chime in. Been a while man!

Found this dry Irish stout type ale in the cellar and for the life of me can’t figure out how I got it or who brewed it. Just that it has been sitting there a while, the best by date was in 2024.
If it had lactose and chocolate in it at some point, it is missing in action now. But as a plain Irish dry stout it was pretty good.
For the 5% it has outsized flavors of roasted malts, camping coffee and bakers chocolate.
The carbonation was pretty wild; some of the biggest bubbles I’ve seen lately.
I’m thinking I picked this up from Aldi’s or Trader Joe’s or it was part of a box set. Don’t know. But not bad at all. Unless, of course, there was supposed to be actual milk chocolate flavor in it, in which case it is past its prime.

Ok, the game is over and I can get into the beer I have for this NBW/NBS celebration. This beer does actually come out of my proclaimed location - started by a couple of dads and a local brewery (if I read everything right, I believe the beers are still brewed at Atlas Brew Works). The GF bought these after reading an article about them in Northern Virginia magazine. Seeing as I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow, taking it a little easy today with some Dad Strength beer - their IPA and Juicy IPA.

So, these are basically new versions of an old concept - near beer - as far as I can tell.
Doing a comparison, because we only have singles and I am sharing. The regular IPA has a little haze, but is clearer. The Hazy has a slight orange hue, relatively, and a more structured head, though both heads were pretty decent.

The noses of both beers are quite muted. My first whiff of the regular IPA had me fearing the cardboard-like notes of N/A beers. A subsequent sniff didn't change that entirely, but I got a little lemon grass. The Juicy IPA has some tropical notes as well as some tangerine - easily the better aromas of the two.

The regular IPA taste starts as expected, with a bit of graininess. IT is well carbonated, and does bring some grassy bitterness. There is a dash of citrus, but mostly grass and then the grain coming back in on the finish. In a little change, the Hazy IPA taste tweaks what was perceived in the nose. The nose is a bit more tropical, and the flavor a bit more citrusy, but the actual notes are quite similar; that is to say the relative strengths are adjusted on the taste.

The GF wasn't able to choose which she liked most, and "likes them both all right." I am easily in the Hazy IPA camp. I will say the lower ABV IPA is a bit better than N/A IPAs I have had. The hazy, though better, doesn't make me think I wouldn't rather have a Sam Adams Just the Haze. But maybe I need a comparison of those two at some point.

    ---

I am with @Premo88 - I wish the OTs were 4-on-4 for championship-level games, but I also detest penalty kicks in soccer in general, but especially in the knockout round of the World Cup.

In looking back, I recall a discussion we had leading up to the 15th anniversary - one that crops up every so often as we tried to figure out when it all started. I believe we decided the it was between NBS #782 and NBS #783 and it seems not all that long ago.

Again, I appreciate @ChicagoJ acting as historian for this thread. And I appreciate those I see keeping it going - especially those that keep the spirit alive. Cheers to all you New Beer Swillers!

Yea, the hockey fans around the country know what 3 on 3 means, I didn't want to be that guy on our family text chat saying that though :grimacing:

But also, like my lifelong hockey playing friend said "but I'll take it..." Oh and those 41 saves, but still, as a lover of the sport of hockey that was the fastest games I've ever watched I don't know how any of them were tracking the puck.

To my good friend @Coronaeus, Canada did win that game, it is unfortunate the scoreboard fell the way it did. I felt for all of them; but I think we can all find happiness in the fact that we were rewarded the matchup the world deserved.

I love seeing would be enemies hugging like brothers in arms, on both sides, and normally would be teammates going after one another which such ferocity.

    --------

Now let's all hunker down with a beer before this damn blizzard destroys our week, and backs, and sanity. Let's see how many we can tack on today.

We're all here for BEER :beers:

With the anniversary, I decided to check where I joined the NBS/NBW party. It was in NBS 560 on November 15th, 2015. Hard to believe it has been over a decade I've been in these threads. It is all because I found this site because I was trying to find a name for a beer based off of random letters on a growler purchased in Iowa.

Good Sunday afternoon NBS -21 years!! Thanks to this weeks host @Whyteboar, and special thanks to @ChicagoJ for keeping the history alive and well.
Todays offering is a sipper in honor of this auspiciuos occasion. Over the many years here on BA, this thread, driven by its outstanding participants has enlightened, frightened, educated and made me laugh. For that I am grateful to you all who have hosted and contributed.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle dated 1/2025 - Batch #4 into the test glass
A - Deep mahogany color, nice clarity, carbonation wnders up the inside wall of glass. Short assembly of thin ring is persistant.
S - Some dark fruit, a bit of vanilla, rich malt thread, some peppery esters, caramel, and fig.
T - Leans more into the malt elements, with the caramel and toffee coming in a strong second. The bourbon barrel treatment is more on display here. A fine vanilla, and oak component help frame out the flavors.
M - Thick, a bit slick, with a full body. The Sweet(ish) lean does not cross over to cloying. Linger is lasting and again a bit peppery
O - A very good Barleywine, barrel treatment is deft and adds elements without dominating. Well done

    Nice!!

Of course, I had to look at the opening from that week, and we got both @utopiajane and @cavedave - in a way. And it has a bit about the weather, and a little rhyme.

In looking at old Dave openings over the past few weeks, I realized how much, in my time as unofficial host, I tried to keep true to always stating the goal of the thread - often in immitation of the hosts "I grew up with."

(Also I had to look for my post there, and the silly multi-image thing I used to do. Then there's the combination of two beers, which I still do)

I just wish @cavedave were still around to celebrate this milestone. Him and @utopiajane really made this virtual bar feel welcome to a newbie. It continued with @cjgiant and @lordofthewiens .
I thank you all, as well as all of the patrons of the virtual bar over the years for making it a fun, and welcoming place to be. Cheers all, and Hello New Beer Weekend/Sunday!!!

The other thing I love to do looking at old posts is see those who, like you, are still posting after all these years. But also seeing people whose avatars I see very rarely or never any more (in any thread, really). Cheers!

Goose Island King Henry II BBA English Barleywine, 13.5% AV. Pours deep brown, with a one-finger beige head that left no lacing. Aroma is caramel/toffee and bourbon. Taste follows, plus a bit of chocolate, slightly sweet, slightly bitter. Excellent smooth mouthfeel, overall world-class. One of the best and smoothest BBA English Barleywines I've had.

A truly “new” beer. Brewed for the first time, then canned, and put on tap Monday at the brewery, not listed on UT as of Friday…I’m check in #4 today - Daft Cow Brewery, Alachua, FL - “Side Chick” Hazy IPA:

Pours a hazy deep gold with clarity under tight, white head; OK cap Retention; solid ring; some spotty lacing. Lemon/grapefruit nose; light dank, earthy aroma. Taste follows nose; a little mild mango in the finish. Medium light body; moderate minus carbonation; no astringency; semi soft feel. Overall, a solid hazy light… tame but pretty good stuff from a micro brewery.

    4.25 | 4.0 | 4.0 | 4.25 | 4.0
Score: 4.04 rDev 0. I added beer to database.

I had it on tap at the brewery Friday and bought one of the last 3 cans “to go” out of their small cooler so I could share a proper review. I would gladly drink this beer again. Cheers New Beer Advocates!

Happy 21st New Beer Sunday…I’ve usually only been doing one new beer a weekend as of late but I will celebrate the occasion with a second.

I did some digging and my first post in NBW was in 2020, it is hard to believe it has been 6 years now. I don’t have any memory in particular to recollect on just an overall thank you to all of you for making this the place that it is. I always wanted to review beers but was always hesitant about posting thoughts early on but this gave me a place to do that without worry.

But more than that, thank you for the relationships, all of you. Several of you I have met in person, I’ve exchange beers with many of you and others you’ve been constants in my beer life.

So my contribution today is a style I really enjoy, comes courtesy of @FRANKHAZE, an English Mild.

Good Word - Analog Life (English Mild 3.6%)

Deep dark brown, clear; beige creamy looking head, attractive settling, minimal, but not void, of lacing.

Nose presents toasted bread, light black tea; undertones of forest floor and slight cocoa.

Taste leans mostly into toast character; some biscuit quality, little toffee, leafy with earthy cocoa; light roast lingers post-sip.

Body is light; just a tad thin; very smooth feeling with pleasantly low carbonation, mimics cask well; dries slowly with light but noticeable bitterness.

Overall this is a really well constructed dark mild; one I'd gladly drink again and again. Thanks for the share Frank.

    @ATL6245
    --------------

Thanks for all the good beer interactions over the years, lets keep this thing going forever. Have a great week everyone and I hope we all make it through this beast of a snow storm they’re predicting. See you next weekend!!!

I was late to the NBS party I certainly remember interacting with CaveDave & Maria, but don't think was too involved when they were hosting them. My loss for sure

This beauty is courtesy of @MutuelsMark part of my Superbowl Squares spoils. Way to keep them Pats shutout for 3 quarters Seahawks!

Treehouse Alter Ego Hazy IPA, 6.8% ABV; 4.46 overall

Pours a real hazy gold with 2 fingers of cream-colored head. Very good head retention & better lacing

S: A riot of citrus & tropical fruit, orange peel, melons & mango for starters, some peach once warmer

T: Pomelo, passion fruit, melon rinds, white grapes & dryness up front. Peaches & berries mingle in with pomelo, guava, white grapes, grapefruit, & melon once this beer warms up. Finishes dry with grapefruit, green melon & peaches

MF: Medium body, restrained carbonation, nicely balanced, a little acidity

    Great drinkability, juicy & more-ish
