    Have a great Friday advocates.

Drinking Kasteel Donker again. In lack of an excellent stout available here, my weekly treat. Love the chocolate notes.

    Cheers!

Before shows like Breaking Bad or The Wire, we had The Sopranos which made quite an impression on me by the late 1990s:

Good day BAs! Thanks @Shanex for opening the bar!

    Today's New Breakfast Beer:

Watchstander Stout (2025) from Ghostfish Brewing. 16 fl oz can, purchased 26/02/26 from Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. $ 5.75/$ 0.359/fl oz. In reefer at distributor, stored at 40 degrees F at home. Reviewed 13/03/26, review 3705.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 Uncredited label art. The body is a bit light for a stout, distinctly porter-ish. The bitterness remains on my palate long after the beer has been swallowed. Gluten free and apparently lactose-free.
    Rating 3.53, rDev +1.4%

Hard to believe this won gold twice at the GABF - either the only beer in the category or the rest must have been unbelievably bad. One and done – drain pour.

    Bitter by Moor brewing.

Solid cask bitter. Enjoying the fire on this cold day.

    G'day all!

I'm sipping on this Bitter from Ridgeway. I had this many years ago. This doesn't resemble what I had in any way. No balance, astringent bitterness is all that I get. Disappointing is an understatement.

    Prost!

Edit: Then, with the last pour, I finally get some malt presence. Too little, too late.

Drinking Knoblach Urmärzen. A very tasty Märzen, with the malt heft and fullness that one expects, with a refreshing hop bitterness that is certainly at home in this style from an historical perspective, along with a pleasant herbal hop flavor. It is a well rounded flavorful beer in all respects, balancing rusticness with obvious quality. A fine example of the style in my opinion.

Oh how bitters have changed, I love new world hops but they have their place, and bitter is seldom there.
This shows in a lot of Microbrewery Bitters, I love sandalwood and chicory flavours in beer, but not here.
But also, possibly here, a lot of family brewers are altering their bitters, is it to accommodate easier to source ingredients or to play to a more modern palate?

Here is a Midwest Pilsner from Transient Artisan Ales out of Bridgman Michigan. It's the breadiest Pilsner that I have ever had. Hop presence is near nonexistent. It's not something I would drink again except I have another can to do a review.

    Prost!

Kind of, sort of, I love bitter but I'm not entirely with him, if it was Hazy pales & IPAs I'd have a shirt of him printed up.
But also a lot of Bitters/English Pales have become unpopular because they have had their malt bill cut by accountants and have rightly been labelled as twig juice.
Craft has bolstered real ale, and will die on that hill.

Despite the buy out, still worth seeking out, especially on cask but the bottle is still a standard to aspire to.
