Amen, brother, amen - my metabolism hit pause a long time ago and I have to watch the caloric intake, but that's different. Dad? I saw the plate get to the table thinking he had a couple days of lunches to go - NOPE! We're chatting things up around the table - at some point the Hoover came and his plate was empty - maybe a drop or two of gravy left! God bless him.

Congrats on the lacrosse - another family memory with the first goal. Those "firsts" are undeniably great moments.

Probably my only new beer for today. Between Raindrops from Private Press. This monster is a double barrel-aged quad that comes in at 17.7% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp but let it warm up for 15 minutes before tasting. Pours a very dark brown with a tiny bit of quickly fading head. The nose is exquisite. Brown sugar, cinnamon, toffee, dark fruit, big bourbon notes, molasses, vanilla, chocolate chip cookies, and a nice touch of Belgian spice.

The taste follows the nose. Big and boozy. Brown sugar, molasses, black licorice, leather, a roasty bitterness, bourbon, raisins, spice, bourbon, tobacco, toffee. The high alcohol doesn't necessarily bring much here. I actually get some fusel alcohols - not much but a little. This is really the only negative of the beer. Looking past this, it's a monster with a lot of flavor. I only got a single bottle, but my guess is that this might get better over a few years.

I definitely get the Belgian quad on this. It's back there, but definitely a bit overshadowed by the big boozy barrel aging.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a bourbon and toffee aftertaste.

I'm pretty sure you were here when we had voluntary rotating hosts - I'm sure it could work again. The pair everybody (who's been here a minute) would remember were Dave and Maria (cavedave and Utopiajane). I think it had some unofficial "term limit" so it wouldn't become a burden? The host of the week would open the thread (with or without a beer) on alternating weeks. I don't recall the rational for going "host less" or whether it was before or after the switch to the weekend format. I vaguely remember some discussion about it - I think I've opened the thread maybe twice in my BA life - I didn't really have a dog in the hunt so didn't pay it much attention.

    Black hog irish cream stout
...an almost solid black appearance with an off white long lasting head
...below average carbonation with a slick but slightly thick body
....aroma is black coffee, coffee grounds, roasted malts, dark bread with vanilla sugar cookies.
...taste has some sweetness, vanilla sugar cookie, coffee , mocha and roasted malt
... this is not a style I often am a fan of but this was very good[IMG]

I always have issues with getting photos to upload on threads but I just tried a California Common style beer for the first time and I am so very impressed with the taste and texture of it learnt a bit how its brewed from here and to say its a style I'm going to be on the look for is an understatement so right now I'm drinking Pond Surfer by Town Square Brewing

Closing song from 10 Penny at Horrocks, had another NEIPA (not looking for it, just happened to be the only Arvon tap they had)
This is a co-brew with Citi Built and neither have it on their website and it’s not even in untapped and I don’t remember the name. It’s also the only anniversary co-brew that Arvon had that sold out the day of release.
But if it’s not obvious, it’s another hazy that is apparently all the rage. And I still don’t have the necessary words to describe it properly. It’s a lot like the last one I had but has more grapefruit, the fruit and not just the pith.
Obviously these are well loved by many people so I feel no compulsion to try and support the style myself.
So tomorrow I will have something much more in my wheelhouse. (And can describe it!)
Oh, I didn’t dislike it, It’s just not in my top 100 styles that I want to learn more about.
Ah well, the music was great!
    Cheers!

I know the times opened I have felt this way, like I was on the clock, and one time was beat out but still posted a long opening; post #2.

For a while now I’ve been a new beer Saturday guy it seems.

Rotating, a with or without beer opening, would open it up to more people. I know I haven’t been having a new beer on Friday for a while now.

I didn’t even know that was a style! I’m familiar with Irish dry stouts but not Irish Cream stouts. Though if they are referring to the infamous Irish Cream liquor, that’s another thing altogether.

Thank you for leaving the door open at NBW Mr. @Beersnake !
@russpowell and I were next door at WBAYD drinking New Mortalis, and talking in secret alphabets that in the end made sense to Russ. He explained that his stint in the CIA in Greece was predicated in his knowledge of local culture, language, firearms, and women. Some local noticed his Mercedes was bullet proof. His cover blown. He had to leave.
Russ is great, and that’s the truth, according to Russ!

Picked up a can in Avon last week this dipa golden orange with a bountiful 2 finger head that reduced to splash marks the like you would see as patterns of dolphins and clouds in my neighbor’s Malibu inground pool. Aroma is a brilliant tropical cacophony of grapefruit peach mango tangerine. Taste follows with an aggressive gruff dank. I’m thinking is too much is too much, much like how my wife complains to me about. There is pine, melon , orange. Creamy, smacky , more sweet with time. Overall I’m an easy grader, but this one is good not outrageous.

    Asbury Park dry irish stout
....very dark cola appearance with a thick tan head
.... just below average carbonation with the opposite for the body being just a bit above average.
...aroma is roasted coffee beans and mocha up front followed by roasted malt and mild sweet mocha candy.
...taste for the most part doesn't stray too far from the aroma. Has a bit of a dry yet opposing stick sweet finish that lingers.
.... a nice one from an under appreciated local brewery[IMG]

New-to-me style (Imperial Pastry Stout) is KBS by Founders Brewing Company. Boozy, bitter and astringent with competitive sweetness. Who could ask for more. Cheers.

A moderate through-the-head pour yielded a finger of creamy tan foam with average retention, a small ring and a broken film persist. Very old motor oil black body shows reddish brown in bright light.

Roasted malt and booze greet the nose with sweet smells of caramel, baked brown sugar and baked pitted and stone fruits.

Semi-sweet with high bitterness, a blend of booze and roasted malt astringentcy is harsh at the first sip (expected and acceptable for the style and ABV). After a few sips cherry and rich chocolate flavors rise with roasted malt (not bready), overall sweetness rises a little and moderates the bitterness and astringentcy. A mix of baked fruit rises with cherry flavor still on top. The finish is loooong; drawn out by the lasting battle of sweet fruit, roasted malt and the waning astringentcy. The aftertaste is all of the tastes clinging on.

Full bodied with lasting carbonation and a malty rich oily/syrupy feel. This warms exceptional well, the booze/astringentcy fades, sweetness rises without being cloying, and the booze becomes warming.

...I see you had their Auld Lang Syne and liked it...that was going to be the beer from them that I was going to have this evening, but it wasn't chilled, so found 'Ship Theories' hidden in the 'Fortress of Solitude' beer fridge...a fine choice...and I do look forward to ALS (which is a barleywine, and they did make some killer barleywines)...

Warka Strong from Browary Warka Sp. z o.o.

From a 500ml brown bottle dated BB 14.08.2026. Poured into a pilsner glass. A big two finger fine off white head on a clear dark copper amber. Excellent head retention. It sticks around to the end. Lots of thick, fine lace.

A weak, indistinct aroma. The taste is of sweet malts. Woody. A very mild, soft bitter finish.

Medium body and carbonation. A pretty decent take on a difficult style. Better than i expected and better than most of this style.

    Incredible beer.
The bottle pours a crystal-clear golden straw.
I love the Suarez brew glass that makes you flip the album to side 2.
The aroma is classic mixed-fermentation saison, but layered with something that smells like Christmas cookies
From the bottle: country beer brewed with generous raw grain from Hudson countryside neighbors. Fermented with mixed culture and briefly ripened in oak casks to yield a dry, golden offering.
Flavor-wise it’s lightly tart with bright fruit notes: green apple, apricot, peach, orange, and grapefruit stand out, with a hint of vanilla in the background.

The mouthfeel is light, lively, and spritzy.
One of the best beers I’ve ever had: delicate, nuanced, and incredibly delicious.
