I like them spice forward and if the beer isn't pleasing me, juice heavy. You got to get your vitamins...

Good Sunday afternoon, BAs. I wish I were tilting a few on the deck today but it's too chilly and windy - so here I sit on my regular stool in the Elbow Room. I'm sipping on Dark Rituals from Bottle Logic, a cuvee of barrel-aged Barleywine and Stout, which was further barrel-aged after blending. Holy brewer's droop, Batman, this is good stuff! I just reviewed it on the NBW thread. Cheers!

Well, I still have Kölsch on my mind! .... and today, no ridiculous glassware such as yesterday’s “THE DORKSTER,” our re-named glassware former known as the “stange.” Nope - today, Beermeister32 puts his money where his mouth is – in addition to his beer! This time with a monumental Maßkrug full of the stuff!

Trumer is one of my favorite breweries. It’s kind of like that old 1970/80’s commercial – “When E.F. Hutton talks, people listen!” Well that the way it is with Trumer. “When Trumer releases a new beer, people listen …… and drink!”

Today’s delicious Doppelgänger Kölsch is Trumer’s latest release. They didn’t have this available during our recent beer pilgrimage Northwards into the hinterlands with the Beermeister32 clan in tow. Nope! We found plenty to drink there, but no Kölsch…. Yet!

Trumer’s version is a tasty 4.7% ABV, 25 IBU Kölsch which has everything you would expect in a Kölsch. It’s a Northern German Ale - typically these are out of Cologne but in our case today Berkeley, California. Noble hops are used – in this case “Mittelfrüh” which I’m interpreting as meaning Hallertau Mittelfrüh, and is a touch on the spritzy side. I love Hallertau Mittelfrüh, I’ve brewed with it dozens of times. I’d like to see a bit more fining and clarifying on this, Kolsches are usually clear, this one is a bit cloudy. I'm noticing it clarify in my Maßkrug as it warms, so dare I say there might be a touch of chill haze here? Trumer Kölsch uses a relatively cold-tolerant Ale yeast and is traditionally lagered a few months to smooth things out.

The resulting beer is a super-drinkable Ale, and like its cousin Altbier out of Düsseldorf, drinkers are regularly forced the indignity of drinking out of the puny, diminutive, slender and wimpified glassware – like the stange! No more! Prost!
