Moose Drool brown ale was originally released in 1995. It came to WI a few years later. Back then I was in my mid-20s and primarily drinking Miller High Life. I was getting bored with it and tried this new beer with high hopes. I thought it was completely disgusting and was "scared" away from trying any other "craft" beers for quite awhile. The fact it was more expensive than High Life, and that I wasn't making much money, made that an easy decision. Through the years I've become a more "experienced" beer drinker and understand styles much better. And through the years I've tried Moose Drool again and again. Last night was the last time. Not the most recent time, the LAST time. No matter how I've tried, I just can't like this beer. I do enjoy brown ales, apparently just not THIS brown ale. Does anyone else have a beer like this?
You know, I bet your palate reacts similarly to the bitterness from roasted malts as it does from the bitterness from hops. I'm sure you must love Guinness Extra Stout.
I've recently also given up on Irish Stouts. Generally, I don't like the "dirty smoke" flavor. As far as brown ales go, I quite like Newcastle. I've had other decent browns as well. But Moose Drool tastes like dirty coffe grounds to me. And by dirty, I mean like actual dirt. More refine BAs would probably call that "earthy," but once it gets past a certain level it tastes like straight up DIRT. To me, anyway.
I am the same way with Old Chub, I love a good Wee Heavy, but I can't seem to enjoy Old Chub, no matter how many times I try it.
I’d assume it’s not a beer known to many of you, Rince Cochon; Belgian strong pale ale. It’s certainly good and palatable just a bit overly sweet for me anymore. Getting old and enjoying this less and less.
Interesting. I was lucky enough to obtain some a few years ago and thought it was great. And I'm not even a big Brown Ale drinker Your story reminds me of when I was 15 I was at a party and the only two things to drink were Smirnoff Ice and Honey Brown. I was drinking the former when someone suggested I try a sip of the latter. The only other beer I had tasted prior to that moment was Budweiser and I hated it...I also hated the sip of Honey Brown I had. I actually revisited it somewhat recently for shits and giggles and it was about what I expected: thin and uninteresting but with a little bit of sweetness that makes drinking it not so much of a chore
Oktoberfest styles have become my favorite, but I just can’t handle the original legend: Spaten’s Ur Marzen. For at least a half dozen years, I’ve tried it again and again, always seeking the freshest stock, pulling six packs out of sealed cases, buying from different retailers, etc. But the finish is always the same: the taste of “meat water.” (Or, meat, since I’ve never actually mixed up a meat water cocktail.) I’m baffled, because I really wanted to love the OG. Had a chance to try it on draft last fall, but couldn’t bring myself to do it with the other options available.
Interesting. Do you have a similar reaction to other German versions? Like Paulaner, Lowenbrau, Hacker Pschorr and the like?
If I were a younger man, I might make it my mission to better understand how different people taste the same thing differently. A friend of mine thinks cilantro tastes like soap, and I have run into others who taste it the same. But never anything else, always a soap taste. I don’t know what it is that causes this, but if it happens with cilantro, why not everything? We all taste what we taste, no wrong or right, just our own sense of taste. All that said, it seems obvious that you are not inclined, nor will be anytime soon, to like Moose Drool. So find others that do taste good and don’t worry about the ones that taste bad. Cheers!
Thankfully, no. Last season the Weihenstephaner, Hofbrau and Ayinger were my favorites. Didn’t love the Hacker Pschorr (though I found its ‘twin’ — Paulaner — acceptable). At this point, I’m wondering if it’s some kind of psychosomatic hurdle. I’d love to do a blind tasting.
I like Moose Drool, and drink it from time to time, but never again to Victory Storm King. That is one disgusting beer to me.
Way back when the name really turned me off, but I finally sucked it up and tried the beer and found it pretty good. Moral is: trust your own palate. Unless you're @67elbirdos -- he's got troubles.
Do you like black coffee? Maybe it’s the roasted malt that you don’t care for? My wife and I had our honeymoon in Yellowstone and I liked and consumed many Moose Drools on that trip. I haven’t had or even seen it since then, but I thought it was great. I also really like black coffee.
I figured they'd have to get out the cardiac paddles when you read my post. I've tried to find a sealed case of the Hell to pull a six and see if I get a similar impression. No luck yet.
I sweeten my coffee. And I don’t love really dark roasts, but I can occasionally do Cafe Bustelo. It did take until my early 30s to like coffee, though.
