That's what I was saying. Years ago I was having a couple beers with a coworker who told me she couldn't drink bitter beers... as she was drinking an IPA. Turns out she meant the roasted bitterness of a Dry Stout or Porter.
Paint Me Purple Ube Lager from the Philippines. I am a sucker for trying beers new to me and this was a single bottle purchase from Trader Joes. Thank god it was one bottle. Swill. Only 6 ratings averaging 3.7 on BA. Apparently brewed from purple yams. Ewwww!
Sure, there are plenty of beers I’ve tried and don’t like. I don’t try to force the issue. If a beer is extremely well regarded in the community I might try it a second time just to make sure I didn’t get a bad glass or bottle. Otherwise I just move on and don’t look back. I’m not sure Moose Drool is overwhelmingly considered an outstanding beer—I’ve probably had it a few times (likely around the time you mention, mid-‘90s) but never thought of it as anything but a mid-range, pretty mediocre beer. It’s OK, there’s plenty of better beer to enjoy.
Here's a question that came to me; have you tried Hofbräu Maibock and did you get a similar repulsion as Spaten Okto? I ask because they're the two beers I get a good dose of melanoidin from -- the HB moreso than the Spaten. Just wonder if it's that maltiness that gets to you.
Last year I was in TW the day the distro dropped it on the floor -- six cases beckoning (a pretty nice supply compared with some years). A store employee told me the rest of the fest arrivals would be rolled out two days later, on a weekend. I came back and only two cases of Spaten remained. Saw the same employee and inquired. One customer snapped up four cases. I'm sure he was reveling in his haul.
I have been on a quest to find that very beer for at least two years. What I've seen has been past the BB date each of the two years. It's a theory worth exploring, because I'm bedeviled by this. No other German Märzens I've had left a similar aftertaste ... although the Hacker-Pschorr last year had an odd finish that prompted me to give my neighbor half of the sixer. I suppose I should start keeping specific tasting notes, vs. just remembering "not that one anymore."
Probably an unpopular take: I love Sierra Nevada. Aunt worked there for many years. I’ve rated 108 of their beers. Was my gateway to “craft” beer in the late 90’s/early 00’s, and love most of what they do. I don’t love “Celebration”. Honestly just don’t really like it.
"Cilantro tastes like soap" guy here. I think we can agree that all of us prefer some flavors over others. Cilantro might be getting the headlines because it's such a strong reaction and cilantro has become a seemingly ubiquitous garnish. But the reason behind it is well understood genetics. I don't know if there's a genetic reason why I don't like lima beans. Maybe nobody does.
I have the same experience with sours. I try one once in a while and they are just not for me. The same with blueberry lagers. Nope.
Fat Tire has always been this beer for me. I think it's listed as an amber ale. While there are plenty of uninteresting examples of this style, there are others that are quite nice and refreshing. But Flat Tire has always been undrinkable for me.
I don't understand the fascination with this style. I do enjoy the style when the sour is not puckering sour and just slightly tart. But it's not a style I can drink more than 1 serving of. Twelve ounces is typically my limit.
Have you tried the new version of Fat Tire? "Fat Tire is not a new brand, but the recipe was significantly changed in early 2023. Formerly a famous amber ale, it was rebranded as a lighter, "crisper and brighter" blonde/golden ale to target younger drinkers and improve sustainability, complete with new packaging." Cheers!
Blonde/golden ales don't appeal to me much in the first place so probably won't seek this out. On the whole, the belgian tripels, 1554, and the Holiday ale are generally the only beers I'd seek out from them.
I must admit that I am not very literate when it comes to the subject of sours. The sours that I see consumed by people I am with could be best described as tootie fruity. The last sour that was handed to me was Gummie Bear as I recall. :-)
