    Revisited April 06th, 2026

Clear, dark brown pour; no lasting head. Hints of chocolate, cocoa, and cherries on the nose; faint oak and leather. Fantastic taste; sweet and tart cherries wrapping around light cocoa powder sweetness; dried figs and sweet dates; some abstract spiciness, cinnamon and anise; fine, boozy undercurrent; Red Man chewing tobacco. Outstanding mouthfeel; dense and viscous; slippery; palate coating; sublime and gentle overall warmth.

Wow! This 2018 edition certainly is a treat. I love the richness and balance of things. Well-crafted beers can be beautifully aged. This beer exemplifies this concept.

    Ratings, scores, review:

    4.25 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0; BA weighted overall score: 4.02; rDev: -6.9%

Burnt umber color, opaque in the stemless tulip glass; thin yet lasting ring of foam circling the glass circumference, slippery legs of foam slide down the glass with every sip. Prominent raw oak aroma; lesser presence of raisins, leather, and tobacco; a hint of old cherry. Slightly sour taste; cherry; figs and raisins; woody phenols; brandy-like. Heavy body; light velvety quality to the mouthfeel; alcohol warmth.

I like this edition of the beer, but was more impressed with the 2020 version I had a few months ago. This latest edition seems a bit thinner in flavor and mouthfeel. Perhaps a couple of years of further aging more develop more complex flavors. I have one bottle left (may get a few more), so the empirical method certainly will come into play in the future.

    Pouring temperature: 45 °F; bottling info: 2022

    Original July 13th, 2022 review of 2020 vintage: 3.75 3.75 4.5 4.5 4.25; overall: 4.23; rDev: -2.1%

Muddy, brown body with a thin, wispy ring of foam and thin patches of head riding atop the beer. Faint aroma; pleasant cherry sweetness backed with a faint, musty wood note. Sweet cherry flavor interspersed with sharp bourbon flavors; very mild fruit tartness; raw white oak; rye. Heavy body; fairly smooth overall; a bit acidic.

Few beers are like Hair of The Dog beers, and that makes them unique and enjoyable. This edition of Cherry Adam is quite enjoyable in the taste department. It is somewhat like a boozy black cherry pie. As the beer warms, a lasting yet thin head does form across the top of the beer plus a little stronger smell develops, more malty in character. A nice and different beer.

    Pouring temperature: 41 °F; bottling year: 2020

#2, more beer fridge cleanup, this was canned 8/11/25 and still drinking exceptionally well. Lots of wheat bread, some caramel, and a nice bit of spicy hop flavors. Such a delightful Czech-style Amber Lager.

I looked at the label on this, I asked myself, “what the heck is a Maple Duck?”

I mean I knew the Budweiser Zero pretty well. I’ve tried all the diet beers on the market, Anheuser Busch does a superb job at producing a flavor-neutral Zero-calorie Lager beer. These were the type of beers produced throughout prohibition, about 1920-1933, often called “near beers.” Another one which is very good (as near beers go) is Corona’s entry into the diet beer world. Athletic Brewing also makes some interesting alcohol-free IPA’s – it’s a changing world!

Getting back the “Maple Duck” – well, actually it is a Duck-Beef-Chicken blend, so I’m not sure how much Duck I’m eating. Duck is #1 on the list, I guess that means more Duck than the others. It’s a delicious meat stick (“Meatstick Dad, Meatstick” wailed a fledgling young-un Beer-Loving Daughter #3 every time we were in the check-out line!) Ingredients include Maple Sugar, Maple Syrup and Brown Sugar, so it looks like this refers to the recipe more than the Duck breed!

Happy anniversary to you and your lovely bride! Seems like just yesterday was your wedding. Time flies.

Glad to hear that you are a vociferous reader. I wish more young folks were even half that. I got to believe that too much time on phone apps and not enough time reading books on various subjects robs one of the opportunities to expand their understanding of the world and the human condition.

Other Half Shoulder Season (8.0% canned 2/27/26): A NEIPA from NY with
Nectaron, Motueka, Cashmere for flavors of lemon/lime, pineapple, bright peach.

Thought I'd dabble and explore another Other Half IPA today. I guess you don't simply dabble in Other Half IPAs. Once you open it you're all in. My only one and first try at this. Great combination of flavors. Bright, clean, and dry. This is outstanding.

Good evening, BAs! Good thing I got some cooking in over the weekend, as kicking back into 12 hour work days isn't conducive to cooking dinner. Or relaxing. But I'm going to try out the latter, at least, starting with a Backwoods Bastard.

    1) Hop Butcher Coral Fly (7.5% canned 2/17/26): A NEIPA from Chicago with Waimea and Peacharine for flavors of ripe peaches, orange creamsicle, and tropical berries.
    versus
    2) Hop Butcher Blue Moss (7.5% canned 2/9/26): A NEIPA from Chicago with Citra, Simcoe, and Nectaron for flavors of orange, pineapple, grapefruit, tropical melon, berries. (Mismatched the two blind)

A Hop Butcher IPA Battle on a Monday, why not. This battle was actually before my last beer, but forgot to post it. First, Coral Fly. Waimea and Pecharine. Interesting combo with lot of orange creamsicle vibes here. Next Blue Moss. Surprised it didn't have Mosaic. Some resinous and similar flavors, but slightly more blue and tropical notes. I found these to be quite similar, but unremarkable.
    Winner: Hop Butcher Blue Moss
