    Greetings fellow NBSers! A cold, for us, last few days here in the Fourth Corner, but with the days getting longer, football winding down, NASCAR having preseason testing, and with Spring Training within sight, there is once again hope in the world. I wasn't able to join in last weeks NBS because one of my local breweries had their company holiday party, and I was fortunate enough to work it. I helped with food prep and general set-up, then took tickets at the door. It was a lot of fun to be able to give something back to the staff that treats me so very well over the course of the year.

    I've got a bit a theme for NBS this time, it's international day. I'm fortunate to have a lot of friends that travel, and remember to bring me back beer from their journey's. My friend Paige (bar manager at the above mentioned brewery) was kind enough to bring me a sixer of this from her recent trip to Barbados. All I had to do was talk care of her Mastiff/Rottweiller mix. 130 pounds of loving snuggle bunny that guy is. I suspect these would be excellent on a warm beach: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/581/7585/?ba=beertunes. I've got a couple more to report on as well.

    Good Evening NBS-

    A fairly dreary day here in Southern, CT and an all around dreary weekend. The whole fam is sick and I'm stuck studying for some work related exams. Not so much fun.

    At least I have a chance to try something new (also a double IPA), but this beer kind of resembled the weather:

    New American Adjunct Lager Sunday (week 412)

    A foggy day, to say the least, and BA doomXsaloon and I brewed a Pale Ale in the ground cloud as best we could, his first all grain, and with his system we ended up only getting about 60% efficiency. Well, that is how you dial things in, right, next time we should be gold. Enjoyed many beers during the course of the day, but now I am enjoying a beer I never thought I would be able to say 'enjoy' about, as it is an offering from the dreaded BMC. Hope you have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

    Interesting this thread. First time I post in one of those, so I will start with the weather as almost everyone. Well, it's freezing here in the Netherlands, after a mostly mild December, winter starts showing its teeth again. It's almost 2:00 now but I don't feel like going to bed just yet, so I opened my last bottle of a Leffe Royale 6 pack, partly to make room in my fridge for some new brews.
    It's recently come out and I had it on my to-get list for some time. I can't say I was very satisfied by this one, yes it was nice and tasty, but certainly not something you would call "royale".
    I hope you had better luck with your new beers.
    Cheers![IMG]

    My friend Tom is a mechanic for a pro cycling team. Late last year he was Rwanda for a race (nope, no Rwandian beer for me), and a few weeks ago was in Southern Spain for training camp. Yeah, Southern Spain in December. He's such an asshole. Anyway, he did bring back this one from China last year. The only English word on the can was"Stoutbeer". Yeah China dudes! http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/25383/68473/?ba=beertunes

    I fully believe that both of those brews, consumed in their natural settings, would be absolutely magnificent

    Beautiful day in JAX, but 80+ degrees? In January? I know it's Florida, but WTF? Good day for a hoppy ale. I won a bottle of 2011 DFH Squall IPA as a raffle prize at my homebrew club's annual banquet last night! A bit cloying, I suspect I would have liked this one fresher.

    Ok... I'm back for round 3 today... Though this one is kind of cheating;

    _____/------ NEW (to my distro) PALE ALE \-----______

    [IMG]

    Kids are now asleep and in relaxing with a pint and my copy of "A Memory of Light," the 15th and final book from The Wheel of Time series. I'm about 260 pages into the 915 page behemoth, so I won't be finishing it tonight!

    I had this one a couple times but never thought much about it. My review from 2010 was a 3.3, which given standard rate of rating deflation means that beer now would have gotten a 2.6 (I have become a much tougher critic as time has passed, especially of styles I love most).
    Today, I'm proud to say that this beer has VASTLY improved its score in my book-- all the way up to a 3.7 (and by today's standards, that's pretty good! It is comparable to a 4.35 from 2010!!).

    Anyway, like I said, Deschutes is new to our distro so I felt it was necessary to revisit this one to give it another chance.
    I actually urge you all to revisit some of those beers you had 2 or 3 years ago and give them another shot! It is interesting how our taste evolves.

    Here's a link to the full review (new review first, original still in tact and immediately following the new);

    I might be back for one more after sexy time with my wife...

    OK. I'm still pretty new here and just didn't want to bore people with a review of something that was already pretty popular. But I'm game if you are! Luckily I took notes for my blog.

    Breakfast Stout was just about everything a great stout should be. The beer poured a rich, dark, brown black color with a beige 2 finger head. Just from looking at it I could tell that it was going to be everything people said it would be. The lacing was amazing, clinging to the sides of the pint for the whole drink. I could smell the milk chocolate and coffee right away, with a bit of sweet malt mixed in there as well. As I tasted it, I could differentiate between the creaminess of the milk chocolate and the bitterness of the dark. The coffee flavor worked in balance with both the chocolate and roasted malt. It had a full, lush, creamy mouthfeel. The finish was tricky. At first it seemed medium, tapering off with the dominate flavors, but then it snuck up on you at the very end with the pine hops coming out to play . It was the perfect choice for a cold January night in Chicago.

    That is better than any review I've ever done. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and welcome to NBS!

    Welcome to NBS mecummins! We just get together and chat on Sundays, and given your capsule review above, I would like to suggest you start adding reviews, you'll do great. BTW, what's your blog addy, give us a link please. So for my next entry, I've got another from a new-ish brewery out in the gorgeous San Juan Islands. I liked this beer a lot, but the numerical score suffered from (what I consider) miscategorization: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30589/89010
