About 1/2 inch in diameter so a young one, your memory is fine!. Total length was about 2 feet or so, very hard to tell from the pics.

Typical that side of the state for rocks to be sure. All the ones I've seen adults, the tails really start mimicking Rattlers some times

One of my favorite long run activities is taking a sec to move bull snakes off trail. Love 'em even if they don't appreciate the scooting to grass.

 

I believe that is just a common garden snake with a checkered pattern and a dull stripe.
