Welcome to a milestone New Beer Weekend thread! Number 300! That's just under 6 years. Before I reflect a bit on this thread, I should note that everyone is welcome here. All you have to do is share a NEW beer with us, provide some notes (not just "I like it" or "I don't like it"), and hopefully a photo. What flavors are you picking up? Even if you feel like you might not be "correct" about what you're picking up (I know some are like this), do NOT worry! People are different, so whatever taste or smell you are getting from the beer is REAL. It has to be, since that's your perception. Most might taste chocolate, but you might not! Also, if you have been a lurker of this thread but haven't pulled the trigger, do it now!

300 weeks is a good time for reflection. New Beer Weekend was born from New Beer Sunday on July 24th, 2020 (started by @Roguer that week). Prior to that, New Beer Sunday had been going for 804 weeks (that's over 15 years!). The idea was the allow Advocates to post new beers on both Saturday and Sunday rather than just Sunday. That thread in 2020 had 213 posts. At some point, the thread (as it is now) began starting on Friday. I'm sure an Advocate out there will remember when we started doing this? Anyway, I'm glad to share new beers all three days. There have been so many amazing BA hosts of this thread over the years. I'll raise my new beers this weekend to them!

The question this week (as I like to do) is simple - what was your jam back in 2020? What beer did you try around that time that blew you away (if you remember)? Are you still drinking it these days? Did you prefer a different style back then, or have you been consistent?

I'll start. Like a lot of people, COVID times involved dipping into the cellar a bit. Thus, I was consuming a lot of Bruery bottles that had accumulated. My own personal preferences haven't changed. I'm generally a strong beer lover. Barleywines and stouts are my passion, but I also love big Belgians, lambic, and good German beers. I have never been a fan of IPAs and I'm still not a fan of IPAs.

Since I'm currently in Saco, Maine visiting Barreled Souls, my first new beer this weekend is a beer picked up as part of my membership. I had a wonderful time chatting with Chloë (membership coordinator) today and got a nice tour of the brewing/barreling facility. It is extremely clear that his is a craft beer loving group of people. Their staff have been there for a long time, the owners take care of their staff, and they are all craft beer nerds. They don't have any desire to expand to every state (or even expand production at all), which is really cool to me. Anyway, my first beer is Eleven from Barreled Souls. This is a barleywine with Eggo waffles, maple syrup, and vanilla. 12.8% ABV and released in 2025. My notes:

Poured at fridge temp from a bottle. Pours a nice dark brown with an abundance of carbonation. Tons of bubbles through after the inch of head dissipated. The head dissipates really quickly with some of their beers, giving the impression of a fizzy soda almost. I have found that this sometimes indicates a sweeter beer, and seems common for their non-BA stuff.

The nose is toffee, maple syrup, brown sugar, plums, malts, chocolate. Really smooth and inviting.

The taste is initially a tad harsh compared to the nose. I think the maple syrup does this sometimes. Adds an extra bitterness (which seems odd since it's sweet). It gets smoother as it warms, or perhaps as I take more sips. I'm getting notes of toffee, stone fruit, a slight nuttiness, maple syrup, and brown sugar. It's a bit on the sweet side, but doesn't reach too high of a level.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a sweet toffee and maple aftertaste. Overall, this is an enjoyable barleywine, but a slightly smaller bottle would have been fine.

    The Goat

Today’s new beer is a Maibock from King’s Road brewery. With the unique aspect is was served from a cask via gravity pour.

Here is how King’s Road describes this beer on their website:

    “The Goat Maibock

    7.3% ABV 30 IBU

Meet The Goat, our 7.3% Maibock that’s here to prove it’s not just a goat, it’s the GOAT. Brewed in the traditional German style, this lager is smooth, golden, and deceptively drinkable, with a rich malt backbone and just enough hop balance to keep things in line. At 7.3% ABV, it’s got a little extra kick. So, while it may go down easy, it’s definitely not kidding around. Malty, crisp, and quietly powerful… kind of like a goat plotting its next move. Drink wisely. It climbs.”

    Appearance:

Golden yellow with a white head.

    Aroma:

There is notable rich malty aroma to this beer with a hint of toastiness.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with prominent flavors of rich malt, and yes some accompanying toastiness as well. There is also a hint of herbal/spicy hop flavor to provide a sense of balance to the beer. A moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Medium bodied with an off-dry finish.

    Overall:

For my palate this is an excellent Maibock with the rich maltiness being front and center but properly accompanied by some hop flavor and moderate hop bitterness. Perfectly balanced for a Maibock IMO.

    Cheers!

Thanks for kicking things off, @Beersnake. And happy NBW all! Well I decided to open this one today as the strongest remaining beer in my beer fridge. Black Tuesday: Blender’s Choice. Turns out it’s pretty awesome. Preliminary review (subject to further revision as I slowly sip this over the next few hours) below. Cheers!

750mL (2024) into a tulip. Pours an opaque oily black with a decent-sized head for a 20%+ imperial stout. Settles quickly to nearly still, and looks like 10W-40 in my glass.

Aroma is rich and complex: dark roasty bitter malt, vanilla, caramel, dark chocolate, oaky char.

Taste is likewise dense, rich, and complex. Tons going on here. Bittersweet dark chocolate malt, vanilla, caramel, toffee, bourbon, port wine, sticky dried stone fruits.

Mouthfeel is chewy and sticky with a body reminiscent of molten lead.

Overall, as one might expect from a beer with this lineage, Black Tuesday Blender’s Choice leaves little to be desired. Excellent stuff. And dangerous.

My dear departed aunt, who along with my uncle - lived in Maine a very long time - she sent me a t-shirt from Barreled Souls, as apparantly one of my cousins (my aunt and uncles kids) has a son that works (or worked) there....have heard good things! Cheers! Enjoy your time there!

I have indeed had this one but I do not have any notes when I had this. Thank you for sharing and if I do get to Haddonfield, I will have to enjoy this one again if available!

    Cheers!

Teotihuacan from Barrels Souls in Maine. At the taproom and shared with Ryan, the taproom master. This is a stout aged in Mezcal barrels for a year with cacao nibs and roasted habaneros. From 2022. 13.7% ABV.

From bottle. Pours a thick black with minimal head. Nose is smoke, vanilla, roasted malts, dark chocolate, and habaneros.

The taste is very Habenero forward. Lovely amount of heat. Dark chocolate, licorice, molasses, mezcal, and smoke, lovely,

The mouthfeel is a bit thin, but overall this is great. 4.25/5

[IMG] Gorgeous day in Central NH and drinking this insane sauce from Tree House. Thanks for opening up #300 @Beersnake.

Poured into a 13 oz Teku glass canned on 3/18/26. Pours a gorgeous hazy milky yellow with a solid finger sticky white head that leaves tons of sticky lace, with insane retention. 5

Aroma is peach, tangerine, mango, passionfruit, papaya, and apricot, yikes. 5

Taste follows peach, tangerine, mango, passionfruit, papaya, and apricot, so balanced and amazing. 5

Mouthfeel is Yogi “ Bigger than your average BeerAdvocate beer. Soft gentle almost creamy carbonation, not sticky or dry, and 8.4% massive flavor, but maximum drinkability. 5

Overall I don’t hand out perfect scores often, but sometimes you wouldn’t change a single thing and that happened just now. Treehouse Brewery another masterpiece. 5

That is what is in my glass to start the weekend, what are others enjoying on this Friday? Cheers all.

What a beautiful opening to read @Beersnake I cannot believe it has been that long! I’m may take some liberty with what was my jam back when and throw it back even farther cause I have the perfect beer for it.

I cannot wait to join the party tomorrow!

Good to see your experience with Kings Road was a good one. I have minimal experience with them but the experience I did have was positive as well, their perfect to style cream ale.

I’m hoping as summer comes I’ll have more time to get out and explore a little more.

Thank you @Beersnake for the invitation to #300. I didn’t join BA till 2021 but covid times I enjoyed getting beer at the Southtown beverage where you literally drove into the building and loaded up. My beer by the cases was Landshark , which I’ll always be fond of.
BA corrupted me, but that’s a story for my therapist @HoppingMadMonk .

One month in the can pours dramatically in my fish bowl ipa goblet: I swished it around like a pro and almost dunk my nose into it to sense pineapple, white grape , guava aroma. AThe swirled head was a beautiful egg shell froth, which still retains a swoosh of lace descending down the side of my flower vase. Taste follows the nose, it is mildly sweet, low smacky num num but it is there. Medium mouth, soft, very satisfying flavor and feel. Sales from this ipa support the good people affected by hurricane helene , in Asheville , NC. I’ll always drink for charity!

Cheers to @Beersnake for starting # 300. I will do some research on 2020. All I remember is working at the hospital during Covid & it just being a circus/grind; times really haven't changed...

Lindemans Framboise, 2.5% ABV; 4.06 overall

Pours an effervescent chestnut/purple with one finger of purple/pink head. Below average head retention & lacing

    S: Raspberries in spades

T: Follows the nose, a little dryness, more sweet than tart, but some tartness up front. Some acid & tartness attempts to fight through sweet raspberry as this beer warms up. Finishes sweet, slightly tart with trace amounts of woody bitterness & red grapes

MF: Light/medium body, restrained carbonation, slight acidity

Easy to drink, not something to session on but a great Aperitif or Dessert Beer

    Cheers @Beersnake and well met!
About that first one you posted from Barreled Souls - I think it was more likely the vanilla giving you the bitter taste and not the maple syrup. I get bitter from vanilla all the time, but never from the syrup.
Of course, we all taste things differently, so what do I know?
Regardless, thanks for kicking us off!

...super clear light amber appearance with a lasting fluffy light head.
...medium carbonation with about a medium body
....aroma is a strong hit of yeast, yeasty crusty bread, grain, malt, and a bit floral
...taste has some very mild sweetness, grain, cereal, earthy floral hops.
...my description isn't probably doing it justice as its really well done [IMG]

I’m back with my one offering for tonight, and it has no vanilla or maple syrup. It does, however, have peanut butter. In spades.
This is the last of the 4 pack that I picked up last week and the first barrel aged stouts from Trail Point Brewery that I have ever seen.
They were all tasty, so that is something. Unfortunately they let the additives overwhelm the stouts. Whether they need a more potent stout or a lighter touch with the additives I can’t say. (But I would definitely prefer the more potent stout)
Added all 4 to the database so hopefully others will try them and report back.
So without further ado, the 4th and final stout from the 4 pack -
    [IMG]
The pour is mild coffee brown that appears stout black in the glass. The manilla colored head reaches almost an inch in height but leaves sparse lacing.
The taste leaves no doubt about what additive is in this - peanut butter. It comes close to being overwhelming. The stout manages to make an appearance but not without the peanut butter.
The feel, like the rest of the series, is thinner than I think a barrel aged stout should be, but that is just my opinion.
OA, if you came looking for a barrel aged stout with peanut butter, this one would probably make you happy. For me it is too much peanut butter and not enough stout.

Tomorrow I hope to have two new to me beers, time will tell.

    Cheers!

S: Peanut butter & boozy barrel

T: Follows the nose, rich dark chocolate, a little caramel up front. Barrel smooths out as this beer warms up, plenty of dark chocolate & some peanut butter & vanilla. Finishes raw barrel, Dark chocolate sweetness, vanilla & peanuts

MF: Very chewy, slight carbonation, warming, enough carbonation to drive the flavors

Wow. I hope they still have this available when we visit next week. I've git a pretty good haul of membership beers waiting for me but I love me some hot peppers!

How did you talk Chloe into the tour? We planned on going to the society member welcome shindig this year but ran into the "unavoidable committment" thing. I'd love to see that facility!
