Im almost 100% sure it isn't beer nerds fighting...i got my money on it being hazef00s aka the raider fan type aka the "unruly dodger crowd" if you catch my drift.
It's in a fairly gentrified neighborhood on a street with other bars as well as restaurants, shops and a bunch of homes. It's a far cry from sketchy industrial parks.
Popped by Echo Park after the game, some folks there who clearly had a few, but overall wasn’t crowded and very chill. Maybe being tucked in the back of an empty building helped keep the crowd thin since more people were interested in the usual gameday spots like the Short Stop and Gold Room.
12-15 dollars for a 6oz molasses extract pour is a joke The dry Irish Stout i had was good They need a fucking canopy outside 2/5 overall.. Would be 3 /5 if they had shade. Respect to those drinking those 2008 hypeboi stouts in the sun.
Checked out Monkish Echo Park last Sunday, wow this place is small! Maybe can fit 25 or so inside and somewhat more outside in what they call the "alley." Was there nowhere else they could have located? I guess they were trying to keep overhead smaller. I was able to get a space at the stand-up counter inside but by the time I left it was pretty crowded. Agree that the Echo Park crowd seemed more rowdy than Torrance or many other breweries for that matter. Seemed to me that's because Monkish is near several other popular bars so there was more of a let's go out and have a good time clientele vs. the more chill beer connoissuers + families I'm more used to seeing at breweries. Also, anyone else notice their draft beer seemed a little off? I had a Riwaka Cat west coast IPA and Blue Heaven hazy and both tasted a little flavorless. I got cans of LA Hat to go and those were fine so unsure if there was a tap issue or those 2 beers were misses or maybe it was just me
The biggest issue is the restroom situation. There's only one, and I can see this being especially problematic during game days on Fridays and Saturdays. Another patron said the city wouldn't allow them more than one, for what it's worth. Surprising for a brewery space.
LA is so crazy, why would they want to limit the amount of bathrooms a pub has? I can understand that a business of given size must have a minimum number of bathrooms, but why would there be a maximum?
Truly, there’s no more space for a 2nd bathroom. The Echo Park location is that small. I wad told that they weren’t allowed to have a portal potty as a second bathroom. I will treat this location as a pick up location and a one and done beer before hitting up the local spots.
I would guess that when they say they're limited to 1 it's based on the plumbing and electrical setup that is/was in place. If there's space for it I can't imagine they couldn't have added another one but it probably would have meant redoing all sorts of piping for code requirements and mostly likely decided the juice wouldn't be worth the squeeze.
There's a very slight chance that if/when the other businesses open up in that plaza, they might have shared restroom areas. Plans for the site show a corridor that's a common area which could conceivably have restrooms.
Had a pour of the Echo Park BA stout/barleywine this weekend. It was a syrupy mess that I had two sips of before just putting it into the dirty dish bin. And I usually like the BA stuff from Monkish.
Yeaaaaah, I hate to admit it but their dark stuff has been a syrupy mess for a while now. Little Twin Stars and the BA variant were AMAZING when they first came out but now all I taste is sweetness, almost like they forgot the "beer" part of these beers. Other recent stout offerings have been similar. I really don't know what happened. At least their westies and hazies are still consistent.
Stopped by yesterday after a Kurz Banquet at Loboy. Anyone else trip out in how low the taps are at the counter? The bartender had to bend in the most awkward position, at a 30° angle or so, to pour my beer. That shit must be a PITA , or lower back, for them after a shift. For anyone wondering about the bathrooms this was the line of 9 or so people with half being women
The taps are same way at the Anaheim location (and I believe that they inherited that set up from Anaheim Brewing). I too, found it odd and asked a worker about it - but he told me it’s not a bother. So take that for what it is.
Everytime I make a run to the Anaheim location it’s seems like the beertenders are smaller. Maybe it’s the taps? I never noticed.
So multiple baad reviews on adieu adieu , appearance looks off , sweet mess is what I’m reading. Usually monkish is the most consistent at haze for ten years now. So what happened here?
