I spotted this post and figured I’d add this beer I had yesterday. A Mobtown Dunkles Bock. Please forgive the glassware choice, it’s just what was handy. A very tasty Bock with flavorful caramel malt, and a pleasantly bitter hops profile. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for this one and look forward to having it again. Malt: Munich, Maris Otter, Caramunich, Special Roast, Carter. Hops: Magnum, Tettnang. 6.9% ABV
I used to see Hofbrau's Maibock, but have not seen it in years. One of my local breweries make one every year. It's good but not close to Ayinger and they don't can or bottle it to take home.
The Goat Here is how King’s Road describes this beer on their website: “The Goat Maibock 7.3% ABV 30 IBU Meet The Goat, our 7.3% Maibock that’s here to prove it’s not just a goat, it’s the GOAT. Brewed in the traditional German style, this lager is smooth, golden, and deceptively drinkable, with a rich malt backbone and just enough hop balance to keep things in line. At 7.3% ABV, it’s got a little extra kick. So, while it may go down easy, it’s definitely not kidding around. Malty, crisp, and quietly powerful… kind of like a goat plotting its next move. Drink wisely. It climbs.” Appearance: Golden yellow with a white head. Aroma: There is notable rich malty aroma to this beer with a hint of toastiness. Taste: The flavor follows the nose with prominent flavors of rich malt, and yes some accompanying toastiness as well. There is also a hint of herbal/spicy hop flavor to provide a sense of balance to the beer. A moderate bitterness. Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with an off-dry finish. Overall: For my palate this is an excellent Maibock with the rich maltiness being front and center but properly accompanied by some hop flavor and moderate hop bitterness. Perfectly balanced for a Maibock IMO. Cheers!
Have you picked up the Ayinger Maibock yet? The Merchant du Vin beer finder says it's available in the Atlanta area. For me, I'm still waiting. (But I'm traveling right now, so no big deal.)
And I must have read it and forgot because I always read that thread. Yikes! Too many things going on when traveling.
Just looking over the styles I've reviewed and you know, I think I need to find some more Eisbocks. I know I've enjoyed more than I've reviewed, but I haven't seen many in a while.
This is my nomination already for Bock of the Year: Spring Bock (Maibock) from Reuben's Brews in Seattle. Just slightly sweet and very malty as you'd expect. Lovely fruity aroma, but the taste is more clean and less fruity/yeasty than a lot of the Bock beers, especially the Maibocks. This is tangy and roasty with a distinct grainy and bready taste. There is a darker note of grapes and then some hoppy notes. No actual bitterness but there is just enough of an edge to the sweetness. Going back for more. Dated 03/12/26.
Bock thread off the main page of The Bar? No way. Drinking a post-workout Roaring Table Maibock -- nice balance of bready malt and herbal noble hops. @mactrail -- I wish I could compare your locals with mine, but I'm happy to have some really great options here in Chicagoland.
Late last night I drank a Hoppin' Frog Karminator Imperial Dopplebock 12oz can, best by 12/22/2024, 9.3% Not sure how old the can is? It held up pretty good. it seemed less sweet than I remember, And it seemed to have a mild roasted/ heavy toasted note to it. Some of the flavors were faded but still there. The ABV was rather well hidden but was there. It was better fresher, But I would give it a 3.87/5 today as it is https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/14879/92039/
Let’s talk Maibock My wife and I attended the Sly Fox Bockfest & Goat Race event yesterday. For those folks who would like to learn more about this annual event, you can read about it in this article: https://morebeer.com/blogs/articles/maibock-a-get-your-goat?_pos=14&_sid=0e171303d&_ss=r Unfortunately, during a change/update to the website the photos/graphics got lost in the article. They conduct goat races in which the goat owner/hander has to run with the goats with the stipulation that the goat has to cross the finish line first. Yesterday’s races were extra entertaining with a number of times the handler fell down and in one instance the goat actually pulled the handler across the finish line as the goat won that heat. There was a lot of laughter when this happened. After a number of heats the final round was four goats and that last race was rather tight with 3 goats neck & neck across the finish line with Ginger winning by a nose. The ‘prize’ for Ginger is that Sly Fox will name their Maibock after her. And the handler was rewarded with the first glass of Maibock from the tapped firkin of Maibock and a gravity pour. And then all in attendance, including me, could obtain their glasses of Ginger Maibock as you can see below in my Sly Fox Bockfest mug. This beer is a tasty as previous batches of this beer. A highlight of this event for my wife and I was that the Alex Meixner band performed on the bandstand and we are BIG fans of his music. We have seen him perform before at this event but also at the Bethlehem Musikfest but mostly at Wurstfest in New Braunfels, TX (we have family and friends that live there and we visit them during the Wurstfest season). A good time was had by all. Except for the guy who fell and got dragged across the finish line in that one heat? Prost! @John_M @ATL6245 P.S. A video I found on YouTube with Alex Meixner performing at Wursfest:
