Anyone else heading to the Lost Abbey 20th Anniversary? Am I being too hopeful if I hope they have Isabelle Proximus? https://www.lostabbey.com/blog/lost-abbey-is-turning-20-this-year
I'm going to be there for a little bit. Definitely a possibility that they decide to put a bottle or two of Izzy for onsite, but don't go just for that. I'm personally looking to get and split of a bottle of Sede Vacante, but those are also quite long odds they will put any bottles for sale.
I'll be there. I'm willing to be they have Izzy bottles for sale to go, pretty sure there was still some left from the last time they put them out.
While I generally enjoy LA beers, I am not a fan of their tasting room (formerly Mason, formerly Eppig). Pinball machines everywhere, line dancing in ballroom, it's too bright with a Dave and Busters vibe now. Last time I was in, the guy whom I think is that tasting room manager primarily talked about all the events going on. I was interested in the beer. I preferred the low key Eppig atmosphere where it was really all about the beer. I get they need to do events etc to bring people in, but it seems having good beer doesn't bring enough people in so they go with a constant onslaught of entertainment options. I suspect I'm in the minority with this opinion.
I'll be there as well. If any BA's want to meet at a particular time and split some bottles I'd be down.
Would also be down. If they have an Izzy in-house, I'd totally be down to split that too. Anyone else want in?
This is the email I received a few days ago: " DEAR SINNERS & SAINTS, Good Morning and Happy Wednesday to all. We have been getting emails about the release party this weekend so here is a quick update. We are officially sold out of the 20th Anniversary DDG Kriek. Thanks to everyone for the support. Pickup will be at our main brewing facility located at 1347 Keystone Way Suite C Vista CA. 92081. We look forward to seeing you and your proxies here at the brewery. The event runs from 12:00-5:00pm. We have 2 food trucks, some live music and of course some incredible beers on tap. Expect us to open the cellar and dive into the library we've been holding. As a way to celebrate the momentous occasion we will be creating special 20th Anniversary pricing on vintage beers. Expect to see some $20 bottles of 750ml things from the past. We'll also have some incredible $20 crowlers and some unique $20 bundles of beers we haven't made available in a while. We also will be putting some other vintage beers in the case so you can reload on things you might have pulled from your cellar. We expect the parking lot to overflow with cars so it might be easier to park on the street before entering the brewery parking lot. Super excited to share the day and space with each of you."
I'll be there at the beginning but probably won't stay too long unless the available bottles are quite nice. If they do put out good stuff, I'll happily buy and share a bottle. If no good stuff comes out, again, there for a bit (pickup for myself and proxy) and then probably head on over to Churchill's since I'm in the general area (i.e. north of mira mesa)
Is the Isabelle your looking for from 2008? I see that it has a perfect score. Does anyone know why they never brewed another batch? That seems like an obvious choice for something so popular.
I found an article on the Full Pint “Isabelle was created from a common base beer to which each brewery contributed a yeast strain and barrels for aging. After 16 months in the oak, the beers were blended to create the final product.” Was it really that great of a beer? Better than Cantillon? I see Lost Abbey has a 1/2 barrel for a million bucks.
i had my last bottle in fall 2016 and i'd wished i'd had it a couple years earlier. it's fine. it's pretty good. it also came waaaay before you had de gardes and other breweries trying to make gueuze-like things (of which this is one, although it drinks more like a brett saison). it also predates huge epic collaborations of this ilk which are more commonplace today
The 1/2 barrel is just a joke, and not actually for sale from my understanding. The beer is probably fine, I've had most of the big beer ticks, but haven't been able to tick this one, so just interested in it for that. I've only been in the beer game since 2019, so it's one of those last whales I haven't tried that is probably super old now and way past its prime.
Cool, I'll cruise at the beginning too. I'll probably have some sort of Grateful Dead hat or shirt on but hmu on here if you don't see me.
Have you had Beachwood’s sour beers? If so, how would you compare it IP or Lost Abbey’s sour beers in general? I’ve had the barrel aged beers from LA, but I don’t remember having or even seeing any of their sour beers in distribution.
there was never a b2. It was a one-off collab between several breweries. The closest thing you’ll find is the “Wild Friendship Blends” The Allagash version was available in-house at Russian River a while back.
while beachwood's sours were a little more wild-forward, theirs and LA's normal ones are both much more acidic and typically fruited. i guess DDG would be the closest comparison but i found the IP to be much softer, almost zero acidity but totally dry. maybe carnevale would even be a better comparison.
Thanks for the reply, I’ve never had DDG, but I did have Carnevalle and liked it okay. I had some bad luck with Lost Abbey’s corked beers, many were flat and oxidated despite being the most expensive beers I had ever bought. I don’t remember the exact details, but it seemed like they had shitty attitude about their mistakes on top of it. This was probably 20 years ago, so I’m over it. I’d like to try DDG, but I’m not going to put much effort into getting my hands on it.
Not Anniversary related, but I opened a 2016 Framboise de Amorosa last night. It used to be one of my faves. I wasn't expecting much after 10yrs but my gosh it was amazing. Tartness, but not puckering. Sweetness, but not cloying. The depth of flavor was wonderful. Still well-carbed, too. I still have a 2017 that I am now very much looking forward to opening soon.
