Look, I know it's juvenile but am genuinely curious. Anybody ever notice they have an unpleasant reaction to certain brews? Bell's Cherry Stout. I do like it, been many years. But I remember several occasions drinking it at a bar. Swear I would see confused and alarmed reactions from strangers (at a distance!). Never my go-to. But, for a time, felt it was the best thing this one joint carried. Fortunately, I soon found options that I preferred.
I'm not sure that my gut biome ever recovered from having an appendectomy 5 years ago (they give you nuclear antibiotics whenever you have gut surgery, and new research shows that the appendix plays a role in maintaining a healthy level of microflora in your intestines), despite a several rounds of probiotics. There are a lot of foods I don't process the way I used to, cruciferous vegetables in particular. I will say that beers with a lot of unfermentable sugars and proteins will give me gas down under, and highly carbonated beers beers will make me burp and give me heartburn.
Nah, no worse than usual or drinking anything else than beer. Burps on the other hand are pretty bad.
I suppose it's logical that drinking more than a couple sour beers that are capable of melting the enamel off your teeth that your gut is going to react accordingly. I tend to get the hint after drinking one overly sour beer, so I stop there. I used to notice that hefeweizens give me gas in the lower GI tract, and I've always blamed the yeast since it is unique to the style and I've never experienced that level of discomfort with any other style. I'm not a lover of the banana/clove flavors in hefes so I avoid them, and the gas issue is avoided.
I would have to say Yes, the answer is definitely No. Although my wife would probably disagree with this.
Unfortunately my favorite beers tear my stomach right up. A good hazy DIPA is sure to give me some intestinal distress, same with a big BBA beer. Lagers typically don't do anything but that may be a combination of the hops and lower ABV. The fruity hops really do a number on your guts combined with alcohol.
While it hasn't affected me in the past, a number of my friends cannot drink Electrofruit series from Cushwa because the distress begins halfway through a can.
Haven’t noticed it with any particular beer over another but I have a good friend who can’t drink sours at all anymore because of what they do to his stomach.
@WhatANicePub @wmeckley44 Wow! I hope this reaction to good beers never happens to me. My old body won't put up with that. I'd quit drinking.
“I have observed that the best beers produce the worst gas.” Hmm, maybe the beer review list should be expanded? Appearance Aroma Taste Mouthfeel Gas Production Overall Or should the aspect of gas production just be added to the aroma section? Cheers!
I think this is fairly common. Also have a friend who loved sours (I would send him stuff from the PNW), but he finally had to give them up as well. He told me the heartburn got to be just too intense.
I can't say any particular beer gives me gas… but my digestive tract has been anything but "normal" since I had my gallbladder removed ~ 25 years ago. The only beer I have a known issue with is "Lil' Dirty" (New South Brewing). It gives me an instant headache, just like the tannins in wine.
Same - I had my gallbladder removed 18 years ago. I’ve waved goodbye to heavy cream and seafood combinations. So shrimp scampi, clam chowder, etc…. Hit me hard. But I’ll endure beer forever!
Crazy. After my mom had her gallbladder removed, the only way she can take coffee is with heavy cream. Half and half doesn't work for her, she needs the extra fat.
