    So here's the background:
    - Trader X posts an ISO:FT looking for beer that I have, in exchange for beer that he has
    - We arrange a trade. He sends a six pack and two bombers, I send 10 cans.
    - I include a few extras, including a BCBS.
    - His box arrives, soaking wet with beer. One of the bombers broke. And no extras, but whatever.
    - He didn't use any bubble wrap. Just loosely packed with peanuts and thin cardboard dividers.

I informed Trader X of the unfortunate fate of the one bomber. His response: "Sorry, never happened to me before. I guess the angels weren't looking out." Essentially "Oh well."

He insists that he's done over 100 flawless trades, yet can't provide more than one reference (reference doesn't appear to be active on BA these days, but had a good reputation in the past). His account was created in 2008, I found him on Facebook, he's a real person who uses the same username everywhere. So he seems legit. But now obviously I feel like an asshole for not insisting that he ship first.

So, question... does this make him an officially bad trader? Or just a mediocre trader? I'm tempted to drop his name here, but I'm hopeful that maybe he'll come through and do the right thing. What to do?

Should add: The bomber is easily replaceable. Available on shelves and at the brewery near him.

I don't think it makes him a "bad trader" but definitely not a good one. I'd recommend not posting his name here and now. Try to work it out with him first. Ask him what he can do to fix this problem

Sounds like someone I have no interest in trading with.

Pretty sure it only makes him a dumb ass for trading 100 times and still doing it horribly wrong. So not a bad trader really though he should replace the bottle for sure IMO.

IMHO, threes no IMO needed- he has to replace the beer, simple as that. On the first day in trading 101 you learn that unless all your beer makes it to your intended party in tact, you must either make good or send the bottles you received back. Hence not drinking bottles before your traders box arrives, and all that jazz. If he doesn't replace this beer its ripping a more than just a slight tear in the moral fabric and overall integrity of the community. He's trouncing all over our livelihood and endangering the overall well-being of beer trading as a whole.

To the OP, best thing to do in this case if possible is to set up a 2nd trade and have him include the bomber next time. This has always worked out for me in the past. If this isn't feasible, or you just want to be done with it; he needs to send your bottle or he's a bad trader, not "technically" but actually.

I would ask him to ship a replacement bottle (bottle broke because of his poor packing job, not f'ing angels). If he declines, then I would 'out him' so that other, responsible traders, don't end up with more spilled beer.

Yeah, he's responsible for getting his beer to your door intact. I'd just ask him to send another bottle along, or if he doesn't have one, a suitable, agreed-upon replacement.

    ^^ this ^^

plus, it is each trader's responsibility that the beers that make up the trade arrive safely to the other person. if it was an extra... well that sucks but it was simply an "extra". but since this was not an "extra", dude needs to come through and send out either "said" beer again, or try and work something else out with you.

I said "I know what I would do if a bottle broke in transit, and I can tell you most BA's I know would do the same. Something tells me that's not going to happen here." He read it, but no response. But I'll give him a link to this thread. Just wanted to be sure I wasn't being unreasonable asking him to replace it.

If the bomber he sent you was part of the core trade and broke it is his responsibility to replace it. If he doesn't, yes, he needs to go on the bad trader list.

If it was packed as poorly as you say, then I would say he owes you a bottle.

I dont know how he doesnt feel bad about this. I would, and would immediately set up sending another box before being asked. I get made fun of for how ridiculously carefully I pack boxes, but this is exactly why. Packed poorly once, and had a break. Its never happened again.

Asking for a replacement isn't unreasonable for sure.

Bad trader? No, not from what we have here.
Careless? Maybe too much for me to want to trade with him.

I've had a trade with someone who also loved those peanuts. 3 bottles were broken, we came to an agreement and although it went reasonably well, I wouldn't trade with him again.

You tell me. There were no more peanuts, no additional materials or anything else in the box. The bottles were indeed just sticking out naked like this.

If the bottle breaks in transit, he's responsible for replacing it. That's all there is to it. If he refuses, then onto the bad trader list with him.

Not a good packing job - would've been OK if he'd used bubble wrap too, but he didn't.

Also, what experienced trader uses USPS?
