Obviously the Bros pinned the Beer Trading Rules & Info, a very important list. And most traders have heard of and read Alewatcher's blog -- and those who haven't, should.

Are there any other FAQs worth promoting? If not, I wonder if we can generate a generally-agreed-upon list that would help out newer traders.

As some examples of what such a list would look like:
    1. Read Beer Trading Rules & Info
    2. Read Alewatcher's new trader blogpost
    3. Pliny the Younger is generally NOT released in growlers. It is DONG, aka "Draft Only, No Growlers."
    4. Maybe something about how brewery-only beers typically trade for other brewery-only beers, limited releases for limited releases, and shelf for shelf.
    5. Use SeekABrew to figure out the distributed brands in a trading partner's home state (and/or surrounding areas).
    6. Prices of some common trade targets, i.e. PtE, Black Tuesday, Heady, Dark Lord, KBS, etc.
    7. Rarity of some common trade targets.
    etc. etc. etc.

Alewatcher does have some of that, which is why I didn't specifically mention it. But, yeah.

    Great idea!
Where do you draw the line for 6 and 7 though? You could seemingly make and entire "price guide" similar to one for trading cards/baseball cards/vinyl records etc (you get the point) for beers; rating each one on a 1 to 100 scale for rarity (Seemingly Dave would be 100, 2 - 10 on the whale list would come in somewhere around 99 - 97, then you work your way down). It would certainly help people get an idea about what was trading for what.

Rule #1 should be: If you are looking to profit from trading then fuck off and go somewhere else.

Other than that, this is an awesome idea!

OK, you are right! I guess I should have said that if you are trying to "win" the trade...... is that better?

If want to give advice to new traders...a sort of "do's and dont's," if you will, please tell new traders not to trade with other new traders. Please, please, please...just don't do it.

Other than posting in the FT:ISO forum - does a protocol exist for establishing the value of newly released brewery only products? As a new trader, its hard for me to gauge what we be an appropriate trade value without referring to previously completed trades. Thanks!

Not really. Beyond knowing their cost and that they were brewery-only, there's no real way to tell what they will or won't trade for.

Thanks. I didn't think so but wanted to check first as opposed to going against established protocols.

as cbeer88 is known for saying, no noob-on-noob action. MordorMongo has gone into more detail on this, but you would have to take a shower after reading it.

I figured I would post this in here and not create another thread. If I'm hijacking this thread and should create a new one I apologize.

I'm interested in getting my feet wet with beer trading. I've read Alewatcher's blog multiple times, looked at and bookmarked Seekabrew and read a few posts on BA. As a first time trader I expect to ship first, trade with someone that’s experienced, and not try to land anything rare or limited. I guess I’m intimidated by most of the threads cause I feel most of them are ISO rare and limited stuff and I don’t have the cellar or distribution to land anything too sought out. Do I go ahead and make a post like ISO: Shelf RR/FFF/NG/Surly FT: Nugget Nectar + NJ Locals or send a BM to an experienced trader in one of the regions? I’m primarily interested in something like Zombie Dust, PtE, Blind Pig, Raspberry Tart. These look like year round beers but I’m skeptical since I’m new and have 0 reputation so I don’t want to make an ass out of myself. Thanks for any feedback.

    Yes.

That is the easiest way to go about getting started... though if I were you I would be sure to include more details inside the thread regarding what breweries and beers you have to offer and what you specifically hope to try.

Thanks for the replies. Once I have CellarHQ updated I'll see what I can achieve.

I was a brand new trader (made that clear, offered to ship first, etc.), went looking for some good shelf stuff (Zombie Dust) in exchange for some good local stuff, and got a bunch of hits within the hour. Don't go looking for whales, don't try to do an auction, and be patient about people seeing your ISO post (you may need to re-post it just because the right people didn't see it and don't go reading back through the ISO:FT board for more than a couple of pages). You will find someone willing to trade with you, guaranteed.

Thanks for the suggestions. What's typically the etiquette for reposting an ISO? Would I bump the same post after 24/48 hours or create a new thread?

Bumping posts is not possible with the way ISO:FT is set up to deal with replies. I don't know the exact etiquette but I'd say wait a couple of days or at least until your post is on page 4 or lower, also maybe try tweaking the title of the post somewhat (depending on what it was before).
