I was alerted by a fellow BA that I was not asking for enough for my 08 Alpine Great so I figured I'd ask what has an 08 Alpine Great traded for lately?

If you were asking for - and got - what you want, then it's enough!

Not in this case. I am the one who reached out and gave Whiskey this information. So if there's anyone to attack in this situation, it's me. I can easily see someone trying to take advantage of a newer trader here.

I'm sorry but I don't think an 08 Alpine Great and a single bottle of Cherry Rye is a fair swap.

Sorry - I didn't mean to come across as attacking anyone. I apologize if that was the case. I am a new trader myself and feel as though as long as both sides are happy, no one was taken advantage of in a deal. However, I do understand that he may not be maximizing the trade value of his product.

Shoot, sorry, my message was unclear. I wasn't accusing you of attacking me, and didn't think you were by any means. It was more or less a message for those just waking up who will see this thread.

And I wouldn't say he/she is looking to maximize the trade value of the 08 Alpine Great. I was simply trying to let him/her know that the original trade he/she proposed was quite a bit lopsided against him/her.

No dog in this fight as I have had both and currently have neither. However, the ISO says it was closed. So now the OP is apparently backing out of an agreed upon trade. Not particularly a good way to start trading IMO. That being said, that trade was way lopsided.

Makes sense. I'm sure the head's up is appreciated. As a new trader, I appreciate the valuable information that veterans can provide. It's hard for me to gauge an equitable trade value of certain beers, and I'm sure the difficulty increases when aging becomes a factor.

If you decided to back out of the trade after realizing you can get more you have really crossed the threshold into dubious trading practices, to put it kindly.

Personally I would hope that if the trade was already agreed-upon, you would send out your end (even though you really clearly could have gotten more), and whoever was on the receiving end would realize they were getting a really great deal and response with some very nice extras.

I completely agree with these statements, but let's wait for Whiskey chime in on this one. It could be that he/she decided to close down the thread, based on my input, before any type of negotiation took place to gain understanding of what trades for what. Or it could be the other thing (which I hope wasn't the case).

last year I almost traded a 2008 BA Speedway for one, I was just too slow to make the deal as someone else already made the trade. what you were asking for was definitely lower than expected. If you did make that trade hopefully that person will help bridge the gap.

p.s. I agree with everyone saying not to back out if a trade is already agreed upon. Keep true to the trade and hopefully the other person should respond generously in extras

08 Great is a solid, yet somewhat obscure brew. In terms of BCS, I see it trading more in the range of Rare/Vanilla+/multiples of 4+year aged BCS territory than Cherry Rye territory. Just a friendly opinion.

Also to the OP, if you have a curiously full inbox (which I imagine may have happened) after posting a trade, its generally an indicator that the offer may be a bit off.

OP: if you have more of these available I'd love to trade for one in person in SD.

No trades were ever agreed upon. I am an honest person and would not harm my name by ever backing out of an agreement. I'm just glad someone spoke up and helped me. I appreciate it a lot. I am new to this as you know and I'm sorry if I offended an fellow BA's. Thanks

Not to threadjack...but has anyone seen an 05 Great trade semi-recently? Hell, has anyone cracked an 05 lately?

Opened one last April. Essentially traded a King Henry + to get it. Many of the people I opened it with enjoyed it - I thought it was going downhill.

Actually, that's putting it very kindly! No direct interest here, but making a deal, and then backing out after both sides accepted isn't kosher. If ,of course, that's actually the way it went down.No idea. Live and learn, ask questions, and educate yourself before jumping in head first.
Personally,I might explain my inexperience and politely ask him to up his offer.if he didn't want to,I'd follow through with the originally agreed upon trade, and chalk it up as a learned lesson.
    That's just me!

If you never agreed on a deal then you have nothing to apologize for and have offended no one. I'm glad that someone helpfully and honestly spoke up on this; a lot of people would have just taken the money and ran. I honestly think most people here would want you to get "fair value" for that beer and not be taken advantage of just because you are new.
