Ha! I'd have more luck trying to type this sentence with my nose.

Lord Hobo's current executive chef used to be the sous chef at CBC, for what its worth. Both amazing people and make amazing food. Cheers to Nick and Dave.

Didn't know that. Big ups to both chefs and their establishments.

Particularly why the industry standard is borked due to the continuing rise in raw craft prices. Bar percentages need to be variable based on cost.

If I drink one pint of Sierra Nevada or one pint of Peeper, the overhead and my overall expected consumption is identical. Yet on the SN the bar makes $5 and on Peeper the bar makes $12. That doesn't make a lick of sense, besides "people are paying for it so why not charge it". A pint of Peeper should cost no more than $8. (Which, ironically is what I recently paid for it at a place that "gets it") At the $8 price, the bar ends up with the same expected profit (and even a hair extra to cover the more expensive upfront costs of the keg).

Meadhall's pricing is a mockery of an already expensive area. Strangely, there are some very reasonable deals to be had there, but you really need to be an uber beer geek to know what's a rip off and what is not. I actually kind of like the place too - I just find it very hard to support their pricing model, especially with LH and CBC right down the street.

Thanks for the price breakdown, and I get the general idea of what you're saying... but by that logic they'd sell SNPA for what, $8+ a pint? It's both the Meadhall's fault for pricing "high end" (cost-wise at least) beers at 5x cost and MBC's fault for selling their beers at 150-200% the cost of of other equivalent beers. Put them together and you have a $15 pint of pale ale. Which no one can argue is anywhere near a reasonable price.

agree with long post about CBC and lord hobo being on top. food and drink top notch at both places because they give a shit about what they do and have talent.

Yeah, I've seen what they've said about it. There are other reasons to support an establishment other than prices, and I believe Meadhall does an excellent job of hitting quite a few of those reasons.

That goes a way towards explaining why food at both places is and was astoundingly mediocre.

All their beer is served in it's respective branded glassware. If they are all 14oz "pint" glasses then i would be more mad at those breweries than meadhall.

You're implying that "any press is good press"? So because people on BA rant about prices at Meadhall and by MBC, they're likely to gain more customers or the current customers are going to become even better/more frequent customers? I don't get it..

Generally I'd agree with you that any press is good press, however not when it's specific complaints voiced within a community completely centered around the product being discussed. I actually think the more people discuss the outrageous prices on BA, the more likely people are going to feel compelled to actually do something about it.

Nah, I mean when people complain about prices it's to try to convincing other consumers not to pay those prices. It's a PSA to the noobs, the tickers, and the aloof that $9/20cL or whatever is much more than you'd pay elsewhere.

You don't pay the rent with margin %. Any good restaurateur knows this, what matters is cash. Any decent wine list gets full margin on on the lower end bottles and discounted margin on the higher end bottles. The cash profit still may be higher on the expensive bottles though.

Bring the price down on that Peeper. Sell it fresh and quickly and still probably make a solid cash profit compared to other beers with a lower wholesale cost.

I lived in Boston and Cambridge for about 6 and a half years. I've had plenty of meals at CBC, some absolutely terrible, most mediocre, a couple excellent. I liked supporting a local brewery and it was the easiest place to go if seeing a movie right there. I still go back if it works when I'm in town, but know better than to count on the food. Just my opinion.

What is this magical place you speak of? 16oz MBC brews for under $7!? Is this a joke or real? Went to the website...no draft list in sight. Is it posted anywhere else? Looks like I'll have to give them a ring and see what's up!

I grew up going to jimmys at least once a month on saturdays...I went there when I went to my parents house this weekend too (well monday). They have a great tap list for a small place. Usually always have 1 JA and MBC. GF WC is always on tap. Last year when I still lived at home NN was on tap when in season as well. I want to say Hoptimum was on tap the first time it came out a few years ago.

Heh. Lord Hobo's food is mediocre? Spotty, perhaps (I've had some stuff I did not like), but it's certainly not mediocre.

I had Peeper at the Station Tap room in West Dover, VT this past week for $9 a pint. I thought that was expensive, so I didn't get another one. Especially since BCBS on tap was $8.

However, if people are willing to pay $15 for an average beer, then why should Meadhall lower their prices? I think twice about paying $15 for a BA bomber, so there is no way in hell I'd pay $15 for a common ale on draft.

At the end of the day, if you don't want to pay $15 on draft or $7.49 a bottle, just don't buy MBC or visit Meadhalll. Its that simple really.
