it is what it is. i've never shown up at Lord Hobo and not been happy with what was on tap. my strategy is just to go as often as possible!

That can be an expensive (though delicious) strategy! I'd recommend handing around BearsOnAcid--get an Abner in him and he buys drinks for the whole bar.

Near as I can tell, at Meadhall the stated pour size is typically the real amount of liquid you're going to get, not the size of the glass. The 14oz labeled pours come in standard 16oz pint glasses, to account for the head. The few 16oz pours I've seen come in non-standard glassware. Something like this for example might say 16oz:

It all seems to be based around the brewery's glassware. Not to say they don't ever screw up a pour size on the menu, but they seem to be quite good about it, which is a really nice way of doing it.

agreed. i have my issues with Meadhall, and honestly, i don't go there anymore unless it's for a special event or something, but i can't say i've ever felt the unpleasant surprise i've felt at a lot of other places when i order something interesting expecting 12-14oz and have it show up in a 10 oz pour. they do make it very clear about what you're going to get.

The way it seems to work for me, too, when HF is on at Lord Hobo.

Maine Beer Co is one of the only newer breweries in New England actually brewing ANYTHING worthwhile that could standup to ANYTHING being brewed in the midwest/ west coast. I'll pay $6-$7 a bottle any day to support them.

Huh? How often have you visited the states of Oregon, Washington and California??? MBC brews a fine beer, but I can find better within walking distance from my house and for quite literally half the cost.

And I am not trying to be a dick. I spent the first 30 years of my life in the northeast and have enjoyed my fair share of MBC. But there are certain NE breweries that are in a class of their own and IMO, MBC just doesn't stack up, especially when you factor in cost.

Drive 10 minutes south to Blue Lobster and tell me if you still feel that way. MBC brews good beers to style, but they're not doing anything different or truly unique. And, IMO, none of their beers are world class or worth the sizable premium they charge.

What I should have said was they are one of the FEW new england breweries brewing anything worthwhile, alchemist/lawsons, etc are great. But CBC/ Jacks are mediocre beers. MBC brews solid and balanced beer, hands down. No one is actually doing anything THAT different around here, including the places you mentioned. You need to travel to Chicago or Colorado to actually get ahold of innovative beers. And I still don't understand the outrage over the price point?! All 500-750ml bottles of craft beer nowadays are between $6-10 a bottle. How many breweries are releasing single bottle's at $3.50? No one that is actually making a profit.

I live on the seacoast.......there are no breweries in NH making any sort of positive impact in the industry, it's actually depressing

sorry to be so blunt, but the problem is your lack of taste, not the beer. MBC hasn't made any beer as good as upper tier CBC. maybe better than their recent bottle releases, but that's it. that you mention innovation and praise MBC and bash jack's also shows that you don't know what you're talking about.

    ---

edit: don't get me wrong; MBC makes a great hoppy pale ale. they're almost as good at it as HF, alchemist, lawson's, NEBCO (e.g. fuzzy baby ducks, coriolis). they're not quite in the same league, and they don't have the stylistic range of any of the good breweries around here.

maybe if they had a business model that made sense we'd be able to see more innovation and experiments from them... i can't believe they're raking it in hand over fist with all the old zoe and peeper i see. p.s. the price point irritates me because i won't buy old zoe/peeper for $2 much less $7, but b/c it's overpriced the stock never moves so i can never get it fresh.

So go to another store to buy your beer if you don't want old stock, I buy mine at Carl's in Kittery and they can't keep it on the shelf....and its 5.99 a bottle. If you don't like MBC that's cool, I just don't get why people have created a thread solely to bitch about the price.....don't buy the beer. Buy something else that's going to make you happy and not bitch. It's a great local company putting out freshly hopped beer. I never said they were doing anything ground breaking, just solid and balanced.

This website is made for talking about beer and beer related subjects. Discussing the price of beer is very relevant.

This isn't a discussion, it's a "let's shit on MBC" bitching session. We all love beer, we all drink beer, but let's face it...we don't drink craft beer because its cheap. We pay for quality. Everyone is acting like craft beer should be priced like Bud or Keystone.

Say something negative about a local restaurant? No big deal. Say something negative about a local brewery? Social pariah.
