Brewer's Alley teamed up with the National Museum of Civil War Medicine to release a series of beers inspired by recipes and brewing methods of the era, Proclamation Porter being the second release of the series.
The Proclamation Porter pours a deep ruby body with a tan colored head that almost clash with one another. The aroma is an almost burn smokiness backed by a bitter chocolate note.
The taste is a bitter smokiness at first, which combines with characteristics of roasted barley and dark caramel. The bitter taste naturally transitions into an almost astringent mouthfeel with light carbonation.
The bitter and astringent characteristics really convince you that this was brewed "true to the times", although the drinkability suffers as a result. While the novelty is certainly there, I can't imagine this is one that I would feel the need to revisit.
