sampled oct 17/08 on cask at volo as part of cask days 2008.

pours nearly opaque black with a small dense tan head. the head drops slowly and leaves spotty lace. looks pretty good, especially for a cask beer.

aroma is good. black forest is about right - dark cherries, dark chocolate, bit of milk chocolate. toasted biscuit. light roast. big fruity character, mostly on the dark side. bit of alcohol. some vanilla. touch of earthy character too.

taste is underwhelming, and i think i disliked it more with each sip. the fruit seems muddled and artificial. a bit cough syrupy. much of the stout character has fallen away, with just a bit of light chocolate and bready character coming through. slightly sweet artificial fruit flavour. really seems like they took their regular stout (which i've always found underwhelming) and just threw in some chocolate and cherry flavouring.

mouthfeel is ok. body feels fairly thin. very low carbonation is ok.

drinkability is not great. i had high hopes for this one initially and was quickly disappointed. a real shame as the look and smell seemed so good. one of the few samples that i didn't manage to finish.

Volo Cask Days 2008.

I'd classify this as an American Stout.

A: Black with a light tan head, no retention or lace.

S: Remarkably similar to Black Forest cake (cocoa, sweet cake, hints of cherries), with an underlying roastyness.

T: Slight tartness upfront; cocoa and a light roastyness; modest bitterness.

M: Light to moderate body, off-dry.

D: The aroma was enticing, but the flavour wouldn't keep me going.

Cask at Volo Cask Fest 2008. A bit stouty, with chocolate and even some cherry added. Majority shwartbeer. Average mouthfeel, I expect more. Also mollasses. Black with lots of large bubbles. Not sweet, balanced with roast.Roast aroma.Sound better than it was, though worth a pint.
