An 18oz (I think) 'pint' at the Earls location on the U of A campus, an oh so old haunt of mine.
This beer appears a slightly hazy, medium golden amber colour, with one bloated finger of tightly foamy white head, which leaves some prolific finely webbed lace around the glass as it gently seeps away.
It smells of semi-sweet, edgy wheat malt, banana chips, soft clove and black pepper spice, and very faint earthy hops. The taste is solidly in concert with the aroma, with a sturdy, almost hefty wheat-dominated malt, and more dried banana, clove, a touch of nutmeg, and tugging musty, weedy, and leafy hops.
The bubbles are a tad astringent at times, but generally no more than adequately lifting, the body a surprising at first gulp stocky middleweight, and smooth with a niggly tacky note. It finishes sweetly wheaty, some pure sugar eventually emanating, along with another hit of that spiced banana routine.
Wow. Relative to the remainder of the Albino Rhino series at this chain restaurant, this one is a runaway hit, style-wise. If you like German weissbiers, give this a go next time you're at the point where you're all saying "let's just go to Earls".
