I am doing this review from notes taken on Septmber of 2006 while on a trip to Brazil.
This is a special edition beer and was brewed by Baden Baden to celebrate the 58th anniversary of the grocery store chain Pao de Acucar.
I would classify the beer as a German Pilsner, with its darker hue, citrusier hop profile and lack of strong floral notes. Hops are not strong in Brazilian beers, even in hoppier styles. I think they were going for an Imperial type pilsner, but domestic palette dictated compromise. I think this beer is good but a big let down. I expected more from a special edition Aniversary/Celebratory beer. The 5.0% alcohol content is slightly above their normal 3.8% Czech Pilsner, but it still is not very special. Plus, it was rather pricey, about $4.00 U.S.! You can get their awesome 9.2% Red Ale, which is a great barleywine, for about the same price. I am glad I did not purchase several, but glad I tried it. With that said my review follows:
The pour into a tulip glass produced a decent style typifying billowy white head with moderate stability and retention but left little laceing. The beer had a nice golden hue, considerably shades darker than their pale straw colored Czech Pilzen. Considerable columns of streaming bubbles dispersed throughout.
The smell was tame, but pleasant. I am only minorly disappointed as I assumed the beer would not be very hoppy. Nice citrus notes with a bready malt background.
The taste was more pronounced than most pilsners of Brazil with a nice diverse all-malt
Palate of bready and crackery tastes. The beer is well balanced, with moderate hop bitterness cutting in and lingering into the finish. I think that the beer is good just not necessarily special edition caliber.
The mouthfeel is good and suiting. The thinness and high carbonation combine to give you a refreshing warm weather session beer.
The beer is very drinkable, I enjoyed it on a warm evening and as I said it was refreshing. I could drink several of these regularly; however, the price kept me from purchasing another.
I hope Baden Baden does more special editions, I will keep trying them!
