2016 vintage. At only 6 months, I was expecting something with little richness and a decent punch of rye. I was wrong. I was actually glad it wasnt super rye-heavy, in fact, I got almost zero rye flavor from it (not the biggest fan anyway, so no complaints). Despite only being aged for 6 months, this beer maintains a boozy richness akin to something aged in the 12 month range. Good beer especially for the price.

This is the 2015 edition of the Dark Rye Lager with brandy barrel aging. Clear, very dark amber brown with plenty of foam in the wine glass. Warm and rich but not a cloying brew. There is a dry finish with a touch of acidity that give it the right balance.
Some pleasant brandy aroma and a whiff of vanilla. I don't actually taste anything like rye, but this seems to have aged nicely. It's very smooth and still retains a good dose of the boozy flavor. Quite drinkable and moderately priced. Certainly the best beer ever had from this brewery. Purchased May 2017 at Beach Front Liquor in San Clemente.

Bottle shared at Retsinis' tasting.
2014 vintage.
Pours a hazy orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, fruit, and brandy aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel, fruit, brandy, and wood flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of wood bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that is drinkable, but it's fairly boring for a barrel aged beer to me.

Poured to a pint glass from a 22oz
A: Rosy amber at the bottom of the glass, with light mahogany coloring towards the top. A few bubbles occasionally rising to the top. Head is a firm, light tan that dissipates within a few minutes to leave a thick halo and heavy lacing. Slight cloudiness to the beer, with almost micro sediment floating, but does not settle.
S: Rye bite, some sweet alcohol heat, raisins, dates, bread.
T: Slightly sweet, overripe cherries, mellow rye profile. Raisin-y date flavor as well, with the rye and hop spice at the end of the taste. Some oak flavor to it, the alcohol heat appears in the belly very smoothly while being virtually non existent in the mouth. Very nice warming sensation that is not aggressive at all.
M: Medium carbonation, crisp finish without much lingering flavor for long.
O: Very tasty, much smoother than expected for a BA brew, and my first for a brandy BA. Overall flavor combinations were all working together, definitely will revisit this if I have a chance to get back to the brewery before they run out. A unique change of pace from the recent saturation of bourbon BA's out there (not to say I don't love them!).
