Served on-draught into a 4.5oz taster glass at Angel City last week. Part of an $8 flight of 5 tasters. Expectations were average. Reviewed from notes. Self-identifies as a "Dark Rye Lager" per the beer's description on Angel City's taplist: "Full-bodied dark Rye lager with hints of smoke." 7.5% ABV.

A: Pours no real head at all; just a floater ring that lasts a good eleven minutes; good lacing. Okay creaminess and thickness. Horrid head retention - it doesn't last even immediately after the pour. Body colour is a dark copper-gold. Average vibrance. Transparent and translucent. Perhaps glowing. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Generally appealing. To style.

Sm: Certainly rye with subtle spicy nuances. Clean biscuit malt. Grainy as hell. No cream, yeast, or alcohol is detectable. No hop presence. Maybe some birch syrup. Dark nectar/sappy notes. Intriguing, Suits the style. A mild strength aroma.

T: Syrupy with biscuity malts and some graininess. Maybe a hint of dark cherry. No yeast character comes through. Maybe a bit of alcohol. No hop presence/flavours; hopping was preservative-only here. I'm not getting the smoke suggested by Angel City's description. Balance is decent, but it's rather simple. Lacks subtlety. Grainy flavour is dominant. Can't say this rye lager is all that rye-y.

Mf: Smooth. Wet. Not oily, harsh, biting, or scratchy. Adequate carbonation. Suits the flavour profile okay. Decent execution. Lightly syrupy. Okay presence on the palate.

Dr: Drinkable for the highish ABV, but otherwise it's rather generic and boring. Unimpressive for the style. I wouldn't get it again unless looking to get blitzed on local beer for cheap. But seeing as Angel City currently restricts their growler fills to only their more widely available, less interesting offerings, I can't see ever getting this again. Pretty average across the board.
