Belligerent Bloke is a rich mahogany-hued, subtly spiced barleywine. Big caramel and fig notes balance against delicate spice aromas of ginger and allspice. Malt-forward flavors of ripe fruit and molasses dominate, leading to a velvety finish and warming linger.

Served on-draught into a 4.5oz taster glass at Angel City last week. Part of an $8 flight of 5 tasters. Expectations were average. Reviewed from notes. 4.5% ABV. Self-identifies as an Amber Ale per Angel City's description on the beer list: "Medium-bodied, amber ale with a sweet malty nose and a slightly bitter finish."

A: Pours a half finger beige colour head. Retains 2-3 minutes, but leaves a nice ring of good, even, consistent lacing nearly indefinitely. No "legs." No bubble show. No yeast particles are visible.

Body colour is a clear pale copper (not amber). Average vibrance. Generally appealing for the style but not unique or special.

Sm: Sweet. Malty, with amber malts, a definite graininess, and caramalts. No yeast or alcohol is detectable. Minimal floral hop character. A mild strength aroma. Generic for the style. Fleeting hints of toasty malts; I wish there were more.

T: Grainy. Cream. Amber malts. Caramalts. Good body for what it is. Minimal floral hop character. I like it generally, but it's a bit boring for the style. I might even call it a bit lazy. Balance is fair but complexity is nonexistent. No subtlety here either. Clean. Low flavour intensity. Average flavour duration.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Adequately carbonated. Not oily, harsh, or sharp. Decent presence on the palate. Suits the flavour profile pretty well. Facilitates delivery of the simple flavours. Clean. Good smoothness. I wouldn't quite call it refreshing, but it's pleasant. Could be softer.

Dr: Drinkable and enjoyable. I do like it in spite of its flaws. It's a pretty solid amber all around. I might even grab a growler of it someday if Angel City ever decides to let us take away growlers of more than just their common offerings. It's quite approachable. That said, it clings safely to the middle ground and conventions of the style. Certainly it's not pushing any boundaries. A solid brew from Angel City, just not an impressive, unique, or special one.
