Presentation: Sampled at the Red Car Brewery & Restaurant during a visit with BAs Davo and Erica on a quiet Sunday afternoon after the 9th Annual San Diego Strong Ale Festival.
Appearance: Served in a small Goblet, the appearance, like most of the other Red Car brews, is a cloudy one. Ruddy dark brown with a turbid body, the head was relatively thin but it retained a broken light tan covering. Nice carbonation, a little lazy, it took some warmth and time to come to life.
Nose: Malts and some Wholemeal bread with a little liquorice and anise that is rather feint but detectable in the finish.
Taste & Mouthfeel: Smooth presentation, soft carbonation once the brew warmed. Nice malty backbone with an earthy soil like texture. Some dark fruits and light spicy feel, probably from the yeast. A solid feel to this Barleywine as the alcohol is nicely balanced with the flavors.
Drinkability: Unfortunately, we had to rush off to head back to Long Beach for an evening with BA Seagoat so I didnt quite finish the whole Goblet. This one is a sipper and youll need time to fully appreciate it. But it is a great last of the night brew and a fine digestif after eating at Red Car.
Overall: I like the Red Car brews, they are all unfiltered and unf**ked about with, so they may not appeal to all. They have an Earthy, almost organic feel which I enjoy. Certainly not a run-of-the-mill offering, different and a nice change of pace. Enjoyable.
