(Notes of 09/2007) Tasted at the Swim Inn, a JDW pub on the West Street in Sheffield; served by a sparkler pour on the hand pump.
A: an extremely tight and creamy off-white froth comes with superb retention, on top of a rather low carbonated amber body.
S: flowery fragrance and assertive honey/nectar come together with lightly sweet cara-malts and crystal malts with a mildly toasty edge, against a creamy, buttery as well as toffee-ish malty backbone. On the balance, more malts are detected than the hop elements.
T: juicy fragrant hops upfront are followed by nutty+honey-ish malts, burned apple-ish fruitiness and lightly spicy or woody (sprigs like) sour-bitter edge; as these fade out, the herbal, slightly tea-ish English hops and mild roasty bitterness creep up, making an ever-so-soothing bitter finish, which is surprisingly tangy and rounded at the same time!
M&D: a very good traditional bitter this is - with sourness and bitterness on a rough balance on top of a creamy malt base, this medium-bodied ale is soothing, soft (sparkler pour!) and an absolute thirst quencher!
