First of all let me declare an interest ; the brewer is a friend of mine though I will try my best to be objective. I have had many pints of this brew at the brewery and it doesn't get any better than that! When I see it on sale in a pub I think I've died and woken up in Heaven.
There was a much loved brewery in Nottingham called Shipstone's which closed down around 1980. One of the brewers was Colin Brown who , after a spell at Theakston's set up the Belvoir Brewery in 1995.Star bitter is the closest Colin can get to the old Shipstone's Bitter (he also replicates the mild and that's exceptional too)
The beer is brewed from floor malted Maris Otter malt and whole Worcester hops. It's a straw colour with a nice tight head , there's hops in the aroma which meet you before the glass comes near , and the ale is beautifully balanced towards the hoppy end of the spectrum. It's a quite bitter brew as Colin likes his hops but when you stop drinking there's a big smack of malt in your mouth which lasts.
It's a session ale all right, low alcohol so you can keep going all night, but each pint tastes better than the one before it and that's the test.
It was a worthy bronze medal winner in the 2005 GBBF.

Bottle-conditioned. Best By date left blank
A golden pour with a slight haze and a low white head.
Buttery yeasty scent.
Nice citrus hops bite up front over buttery toasty malt with a short amber finish.
Light body, easy to drink, your basic session beer.
