A 500ml bottle with a BB of Jan 2013 (batch 2816). Picked up a while ago from a shop in Whitby (where the brewery is based). Not sure where the name comes from, but the label carries a story about Dracula's arrival in Whitby which features a large black dog.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A dark ruby-brown hue with medium carbonation. Yields a decent head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a minute or two before subsiding. Aroma of rich, fruity malt with hints of roasted grain, caramel, dried fruit, mild brown sugar, earthy yeast, stewed hops and a twinge of vanilla. Slightly sweet.

Tastes of fruity malt with a dry bitter finish. Notes of roasted grain, caramel, dried fruit, chocolate, faint brown sugar, stewed hops and earthy yeast. There is a subtle funky sourness lurking in the background, followed by a decent bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with nice carbonation and good body. Somewhat astringent, with an aftertaste of dark roasted malt and bitter stewed hops.

Pretty good stuff - tasty and well-balanced. Unusually dark for a bitter (but I wasn't prepared to categorise it as an ESB). Rich malt flavours/aromas dominate; offset by a solid addition of bittering hops. Drinkable, and goes down nicely on a cold winter night. Worth sampling if you come across it.
