Comes in an attractive purple box, slick packaging, nice writeup. Stand I&G clear bottle, at least it won't come skunked this way.

Pours a clear ruby red, thick off white head forms, settles down to a ring and thin layer pretty quick, some lacing. Smell is very oaky, toffee, bourbon/whiskey, some soft malts, citrus/floral, pretty neat. Wow, crazy toffee/vanilla beginning to this one, some floral and clean malts, little bit of booze and a sweet finish, not much bitterness detectable in this one, finish is somewhat weak. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation, I wasn't sure if I liked this at first but I can't stop drinking it, wish the flavour was more pronounced though, but a great use of oak aging.

Gift-boxed 30ml bottle 2007 edition

Poured a deep gold with a 1 finger sticky cap.

Aromas of thick caramel some earthy and woody tones

Interesting IPA..richly malty with deep caramel tastes and some light apple tones in the front..middle gets a tad more interesting..earthy-woody-tart like sour peach...finishes wet with a sweet and sour woody after taste.

Not what I look for in an IPA...and I fought the idea that the "butterscotch" aromas and tastes were diacetyl... but certainly well matured rounded ale, very soft to the mouth with interesting unique complexity...but a tad sweet for my liking

Cellared for about 10 months ( best before of Oct 24/07 but I am sure it would hold up well past that date). I prefer this brew cellared as apposed to fresh, still have one left and that makes me happy. The 06 pours with a medium sized head that lingers atop the deep purple colored brew. A good amount of lacing marks the glass.

The nose is boozy but pleasant, oaky whiskey goodness, dark fruits and winy.

Tastes slightly bitter, oaky with some whiskey/bourbon alcohol notes coming into play. Also has a nice winy character to it. I really enjoyed this one but its not the most drinkable beer (IMO).

It took me a good while to hunt down this beer at a Waitrose supermarket in Sheffield. This "Limited Edition 2006" is miles apart from the other product named "Limited Edition 2006 IPA", and is one of only 40,000 bottles available. So I'm really glad to finally have tried them both. BB 25/10/2007, served cool in Innis&Gunn's own broad-rimmed goblet.

A: nearly copper in colour but slightly darker; the beige beer head settles quite fast to a thin blanket on top of very elegant, moderate carbonation.
S: intense aroma mixed of prunes, a sour edge of dried berries and raisins, oaky notes (hinting coconut shavings), and a touch of toffee. The maltiness is rather attenuated, allowing the full fruitiness and reasonable oakiness to rule. Very deep and nice, yet a tad sweet for the overall balance.
T: the initial, effervescent flow of marinated prunes and raisins (as on the nose) comes on a bedrock of lightly toasted and faintly chocolatey malts, earthy hop bitterness, roast tea-leaves, and a slightly tannic touch of dried herbs, licorice, mixed pepper cones, and woodiness in the aftertaste; turning quite dry in the finish, while the sides of the tongue are entertained by chewy dried-leafy hop bitterness and a mildly sour-salty edge of yeasts and oak-ageing(?).
M&D: lightly effervescent on the mouthfeel, this ale is med-bodied and shows a very good depth of barrel-ageing, while the alc. really is nowhere to be found on the palate. All in all, this is (also) a must-try in Innis&Gunn's full range! One should watch out esp. for the very long and delicate aftertaste mixed of fruitiness and a woody texture, and the oaky intervention is apparently lesser than other I&G products and renders a better balance overall.

Served at cellar temp.

Aromas of vanilla and something citrusy...lime?

Looked brown/ red. Head about two finger width. Left a good amount of lace. The head lasted about half way through the Beer (i didn't time myself so that might not be all that helpful).

Tasted good. The flavour reminds me of those chocolate oranges that you "smack & unwrap". A little bit of oak flavour, but not as much as the regular Innis & Gunn, maybe thae oak is hidden by the chocolate malt flavours.

Mouthfeel was ok. Would have been better with less carbonation. Medium bodied.

Overall I like it, too bad I'll never get to drink it again.

Viggo hooked me up with a couple of these. thanks eric!

12oz bottle dated 24 oct 07.

pours very deep reddish amber colour with a thin off white head. spotty lace.

aroma is good. you can definitely tell this one was oak aged. lots of vanilla and bourbon. bit of earthy hops. alcohol. bready malt.

taste is intense. tons of bourbon. vanilla. low bitterness. bready malt. bit of alcohol. the focus of this is clearly the oak aging.

mouthfeel is good. medium body with a moderate well integrated carbonation.

drinkability is ok. the bourbon+vanilla is a bit much for my taste, but it's still an interesting beer. i think someone more into bourbon would really enjoy this.

Thanks to Robbeer for bringing this bottle all the way to Japan.

Very nice Ruby amber color, with tannish tiny head.

Predominantly wood on the nose with gamey undertones.

Initially dry with sweet after taste (faintly of old fruit on the finish). Flavor primarily wood and whiskey, but a little smokey malt sneaks in there as well. No bitterness to speak of.

This is suprisingly light bodied. This has to be the darkest pale ale I have ever had.

Impressive dark brown appearance rounded off with a thick white head. The smell is sweet and caramel, fruity.

The taste is dark and sweet, excellent hops and a bit smokey. A bit like chocalate ended off with a strong alcohol kick. Excellent carbonation. Aftertaste is very smooth and tasty.

Rare and pricey beer, but well worth a try at least once.

Bottle: Poured a clear deep brown color ale with a small bubbly head that disappeared quickly. Aroma of light oak and whisky is quite strong and dominant. Taste is dominated by the bourbon with some small traces of peat malt and oak. Body is kind of light for the style with some low carbonation. While this is an interesting experience from a UK brewer, the whisky is too dominating and since I’m not a big fan of whisky I can’t say that I will be seeking this again in the future.

This is actually one of the two Limited Edition 2006 releases from Innis and Gunn. An oak-aged India Pale Ale, the alcohol by volume reads 7.2%.
Brewed October 27, 2006 enjoyed December of that year. I purchased a couple of the only 40,000 bottles claimed to be brewed and aged for 154 days in "hand selected" oak casks. Very nice presentation, standard I & G clear bottle within a blue-purple box, descriptive writeup. 330ml best before November 2007. Bottle #16337.
Poured into a Stella tulip revealing a gorgeous chestnut amber colour. Deeper mahogany shades over top of a roasty sienna. A fine level of head that would persist through the course. Leaves some lacing.
A rich and decadent aroma, mostly a refined oak sense. Notes of charred wood, toffee, trace alcohol and plenty of vanilla resulting. Also gentle notes of honey-dew, flowers, butter crisps, odd hops, and creamy chocolate. Very intriguing, mild potency, and with some considerable depth.
Tastes seem to mimic the aroma. A very light bitterness with flavours leaning stronger towards the malt bill. Again I sense a light, perfumy honey/flower taste. Fairly zesty and snappy, certainly some element of fruitiness. A smooth, creamy, buttery texture. Oak notes present. Plenty of English caramel malt with light hop touch. Fairly light on the palate, subdued carbonation. Flavours have mellowed nicely with a fine level of blending, complimenting each other nicely, especially considering how aroma and taste seem to go hand in hand.
Like many of its English counterparts I found this a little too subtle to put it amongst the top tier of limited edition, or 'grand cru' type offerings. But also would attest for its refinement and intricacies and most of all - extremely drinkability... It was greatly enjoyed.

Clear, cool-looking bottle that comes in a fancy purple box. Got a couple of these around Christmas -- will drink this one and let the other age for a few months and see how it goes.

Poured a reddish gold into a chalice. Decent head with lots and lots of sticky lacing.

Aroma is really nice on this one -- best part of the beer. Strong, sweet vanilla/oak dominates, with some roasted wood and arrowroot cookie notes.

Flavour is solid, but more of the same. Vanilla/oak throughout, with a smoky aftertaste. A mild cherry tartness starts to appear as this warms toward room temperature. Mouthfeel is fine, but nothing spectacular -- could have used a little more body to it.

Pours a great head, bourbon colour and aroma, lace in glass, with a hint of open fermentation and vanilla. Taste is smooth with bourbon, wine, sherry, woody, a fine achievement.Great carbonation and drinkability. Bigger buzz alcohol, this is a 7.2% clearly marked on bottle.

Crystal clear ruby colour with a dense whitish cap. The head fell quickly to a ring, leaving behind some nice lacing. Lots of toffee and caramel in the aroma, along with oak, bourbon, honey malts and light citrusy hops. Very nice, warming. Lots of vanilla up front, closely followed by toffee and moderate bitterness. Some oak, not as much whiskey as in the aroma, but a little alcohol towards the finish. The malt falls away by the end, leaving a bit of light citrus. Lingering soft bitterness. Medium body and carbonation, more crisp than creamy. Quite nice. This is a well balanced brew that I'd gladly pick up again.

I didn't find it particularly hoppy (aroma or flavour), though it does have a crisp bitterness. I'd be inclined to classify it as a Scotch ale (it is from Edinburgh).

A: Deep amber-brown; off-white head, very little retention, some lace.

S: Earthy/mineral aroma (with a little sulfur) that I'm not fond of. Toffee, fruit & nuts.

T: Malty (nut, bread, caramel) & very woody; hints of orange citrus and chocolate; with a dry, earthy aftertaste. Well-pronounced bitterness. Alcohol flavour is subtle.

M: Moderate-to-full body is surprisingly dry (very well-attenuated). Moderate carbonation.

D: It's alright, but not as smooth as anticipated. I wonder if it would mellow with even a little more age?

The bottle says 7.2% ABV and has no mention of the word 'IPA' so Im putting this review here. Im not sure why the other Toronto BAs reviewed the 6.4% IPA, maybe both beers were recently released in Toronto.

Pours a super clear dark amber with a smallish head. Disperate sheets of lace coat the glass. The aroma is oaky, with coarse malt grain and some sweetness. The taste is dominated by fragrant sweet oak flavors. There is tonnes of vanilla but not much in the way of oak 'toastyness'. Sweet and chocolatey dark malts show in the background as does some light herbal hoppiness. There is very little hop bitterness. The finish feels kind of like watered down whiskey, with the peaty oak flavors and alcohol warmth. The mouthfeel is medium with low carbonation and a slight coating sensation.

This is a pretty decent oak aged beer, though its a little too sweet, with almost no toasted oak flavor and too much vanilla.

A - Pours a reddish-copper with a thick inch of off-white head. This falls to a creamy finger-thick layer. A few small streamers are the only carbonation to be seen.

S - Lemon, liquorice, whiskey, some tart sourness, vanilla, slight chocolate.

T - Initial mouthful of tart lemon, with some sourness creeping through. Chocolate briefly appears in the middle, before a fruity, floral flavour move forward in the finish. Light whiskey in the aftertaste, with the slightest appearance of the alcohol. Tasty.

M - Light-medium body, with a smooth and quite creamy texture. Carbonation is fairly lively, but not overly so.

D - Interesting beer. Beautiful mellow and balanced character, with some unexpected smells and flavours mixing well together.
