Double Cask-matured using Laphroaig Single Malt and Port Casks. This is a bold and uncompromising beer.
Islay; a rugged, wild isle that’s famed for its dramatic landscape and uncompromising single malt whisky. Where rich, peated earth, the sea spray in the air and centuries of craftsmanship, all infuse the whisky with distinctive, complex flavours. And there are few whiskies more complex and more emphatic than the Laphroaig Islay Single Malt Whisky.
For this year’s release, we have taken Laphroaig First Fill Casks in which we have slowly matured an Innis & Gunn beer, we've then finished the beer in Laphroaig Port Casks. Absorbing all the deep flavours from the oak – spicy woodsmoke and peat – the beer adds its own rich, roasted flavour. The end result is something as unforgettable as the island and the whisky that inspires it.
Islay Whisky Cask is a 7.4% Scottish Red Ale, slowly matured in Laphroaig single malt first fill scotch whisky and finished in port casks – from one of the most renowned malt whiskies in the world.

330 ml bottle served cold into a pint glass. LCBO purchase for two worked out to $6.50 CDN per bottle. I am a lover of peaty scotches from the Isle of Islay, so that will certainly have an impact on this review. Best before March 2024. Another 10 year anniversary with BA beer.
Appearance - Clear smoky brown color with a small half finger of off-white wispy head on top. Little retention.
Smell - Plenty of smoke and peat, with underlying caramel and vanilla notes that are central to virtually all I&G beers. The peatiness is quite impressive and imposing.
Taste - Initially, some malt and caramel sweetness, then smoke and peat come forward prominently. Some leather mixed in for good measure. A light fruitiness in the centre of the aftertaste too. That would be the impact of the finishing in the port casks.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, low carbonation and finish is delicate and fairly light. Easy to drink quickly despite the substantial flavors.
Overall - One of the best from I&G in years, very happy to have tried this special and certainly limited edition run while I could. Finally a beer that imparts enough of the whiskey characteristics into the brew.

Bottle. Pours a deep chestnut colour with a light tan head.
A subtle smell of smoky charred quercus and peat which becomes full-on upon tasting. Some hints of vanilla noted.
Full in body. Light to medium carbonation.
Well made but smoked beers are not to my liking.

This is the 3rd Innis & Gunn collaboration with Laphroaig. Though rather unhelpfully that is not marked on the bottle in any way, not does it seem to be on their website. The only place it seems to appear is in the description on the back of the box.
Other distinguishing features of this edition: The large font text on the bottle 'ISLAY WHISKY CASK BEER' is printed in pale blue (IIRC it was orange in prior years). On the front of the box the style is noted as 'Scottish Red Beer' and again IIRC that was not the same in prior editions. Long/short = these undated editions of very similar beers is bound to cause a lot of confusion!
------------------------------------------------
L - Pours very dark chestnut, clear, with a 5mm cream coloured ultra-fine bubble cap. ps Holds well, forms lacing.
S- Notably smokey with a woody whisky barrel note. The smoke being very Laphroaig indeed.
T- Smoke, whisky, oaked. After a few sips I no longer register the whisky, but the smoke+timber are still there. The smoke is almost as prominent as a German rauchbier.
F- It has a richness to it, but I think the detail of it might be masked by the smoke+timber. That makes it come over as a bit sugary and thin for me. The ABV% doesn't get a look-in, if anything it feels a bit underpowered.
O- Unfortunately this one isn't really coming together for me. It seems possibly unbalanced, but that's just IMHO and I hope others can find it more their thing .
Bought from Waitrose £5 330ml bottle. BB: @neck, 3/24.
