Pours a very cloudy amber color with a thick foamy head. Head retention is very good. Lacing is excellent. Nice and foamy. Very aromatic. Juicy citrus and maybe some mild piney resin at the end. Taste is good. It still has a nice juicy citrus, good amount of piney resin and nice amount of bitterness. A little bit of dryness at the end. I think this beer should be rated higher than what it is. It is tasty. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Alcohol well hidden.

A good, big Texas IPA. Moderate malty backbone, a fair bit of hops - citrus, oily pine, some bitterness, a good buzz considering just one downed 16oz 8% can. Not much smell. Sticky lacing and a low wet/moreso sticky kinda drool after taste. Not bad man.

Medium honey in color. The head is off-white and seems to hold up pretty well. There a bit of lacing but not much.

A bit tropical but mostly piney bitterness. Maybe some semi sweet grapefruit if anything. This is very bitter forward.

Its seems to be balanced ok. This one is all about the piney hops. If anything the alcohol is well hidden.

Mouthfeel is ok. Bordering heavy with medium carbonation. A bit more carb wouldnt hurt.

Re-reviwed 7-29-2018 this batch is less than 2 weeks old

Pours an effervescent gold with 2 fingers of ivory colored head. Stays effervescent, above average head retention & lacing

S: Citrus, grapefruit & pomelo, fades a touch once warm

T: Follows the nose, plenty of breadyness too, plus dryness. Cakey dryness as this warms, grapefruit & just a touch of pear & white grape as this warms. Finishes crisp, dry, cakey & citrussy

MF: Fairly chewy, pretty firm carbonation & good balance

Drinks fairly easy, but you will feel the 8.5% ABV. Solid take on the style

Initial impression from a can from a 4-pack that ran me $11.49 USD at an H-E-B:

Head fades to nothing within 20 seconds. Pitiful.

Mouthfeel is alternately too thin and too thick, leaving an impression of a weak beer on the palate. Hop profile is similarly weak, lacking both boldness and pungency. Hop flavour is tired and generic...floral flavour is really all I get along with some unchecked bitterness on the back end.

Released in the cash-grab 4 pack of 500ml cans format, High Boy may be the most expensive disappointment from Independence, the brewery I'd probably single out as Austin's worst (and I've been to Last Stand). The mouthfeel is way off and the beer fails to showcase hops in an effective way - which is basically the whole point of the style.

I find no inspiration or craft here. At least it's 8.5%, so it'll get you drunk...

High D+ (2.50) / NOT RECOMMENDED
