its crazy how good the hoppy stuff was here at middle ages when i was in recently. i remember never being a huge fan of their more english type hoppy beers in the old days, but things have taken a turn for the modern here in the styles, they have caught up to the times it seems, and i was impressed with all we had, but this one really stood out. apparently named for a grateful dead cover band i need to see. this is a really pale, hugely dry hopped, hazy ipa, and its nothing like the middle ages ipa types of the past. its got strong notes of ripe guava and passion fruit and melon and navel orange through its creamy thick white head, very little from the grain or yeast here, seems clean in that regard, and the hops are just bursting with freshness, very southern hemisphere to me, although i dont know and cant place the varietals, nothing english about it though! its really juicy in taste with all the aforementioned fruits apparent, some lemongrass to, a light floral aspect, and a delicate vibe that seems odd with how dense this looks, incredibly fresh and pungent without being green or bitey as i drink it, impressive. the body is smooth, i get some light graham cracker and dry cereals from the malt but not much more than that, some protein too, and an almost creamy texture which these hops seem to love, almost teases some lactose, but i dont think there is any of that actually in here. its well carbonated, pillow soft, and dripping with new school hop goodness. maybe the best hoppy beer i have ever had from middle ages. i know it was made for a special occasion, but they should probably keep this one rolling...
