Dark red mahogany color. A ceamy, abundant, longstanding beige foam.
In the smell some malt lightly toasted, hazelnut, earth, musk, lightly burned caramel, light chocolate.
Mild taste, light, hazelnut, malt, and again chocolate notes.
In the aftertaste again notes of lightly burned caramel, hazelnut, toasted malt, cocoa.
Light body.
Good, drinkable, pleasant.

Bottle-conditioned ale bought at the RAIB (Real Ale in a Bottle) stall, GBBF 06. BB 10 JUL 07, served cool in a straight imperial-pint glass.
A: pours a dark brown colour with caramel glows against light; the effervescent beige beer head grows slowly but firmly to a 2.5cm thick tight froth, then slowly breaking down from the centre to a basin-shaped cap sustaining throughout the drink... constant streams of lively fizziness underneath.
S: strong aroma of cocoa prevails upfront, slightly sweet with a nice hint of vanilla and nuttiness, backed by a more settled sweetness of caramel malts, brown sugar, and mild roastiness, while a light flow of ripe black stone-fruits and tea-leafy hops also abound in the background... light, refreshing, but full of enjoyment. As it warms, a mildly earthy note of supposedly Fuggles hops(?) gradually forms.
T: the bitter-sweet and slightly sour edges of black malts, bitter-chocolates, and semi-thick, black tea-ish flavour upfront slowly introduces a deeper flavour of chewy and bitter roasted malt flavour, backed by a reasonably strength of dryness from roast tea-leafy hops in the aftertaste. Soothing, semi-dryish and bitter-ish finish where a residual taste+aroma of licorice, roasted walnuts, and black sugar lingers.
M&D: the carbonation is slightly astringent upfront for a real ale, but not OTT, as it softens bit by bit; refreshingly-textured, med-bodied, balanced, pretty flavoursome if taking into account its low abv. The bitter-ish aftertaste in balance with the malts is esp. nice... A beer punching above its weight, just the way I like a Dark Mild~~ Really looking forward to trying its cask-version.
