355ml can - day 11 of the 2018 Parallel 49/Red Racer Alpine Adventure Pack. What, no reference to 1980s Canadian content rock band Frozen Ghost?
This beer pours a clear, bright medium orangish copper colour, with a teeming tower of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat bubbly tan head, which leaves some scattered cloud form lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.
It smells of bready and doughy caramel malt, toffee candy, some orange, red grapefruit, and lemon citrus peel, a twinge of earthy mustiness, and subtle leafy, weedy, and piney green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, toffee pudding, candied generic citrus rind, dense simple syrup, fruitcake, and more well understated earthy, leafy, and piney hoppiness.
The carbonation is average in its palate-coating frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and fairly smooth, with a sugary creaminess pretty much there from the get-go. It finishes off-dry, the various sweet components having a lingering field day of sorts.
Overall - whew! While this is certainly full of flavour, and the even 10 points of ABV are expertly masked, it comes across as just too unbalanced. For an American version of the style, we need a whole hell of lot more off-setting hop bitterness, because I'm starting to feel like scraping my tongue. Should I see?
